What a shame

I found this buck laying in the ditch this morning. He must have been hit last night. He had some really good mass. It always a bummer to take pictures like this.

That's to bad because that buck does look like he had some great potential, if not this year then next year for sure. Did you keep the antlers?

No I was working. What would do you do to preserve them when there full of blood? Alaskan What do you mean let it go to waste?

OK I'll bite...if you cut those off won't they dry up to nothing?? There is just cartilage and blood there now.. right??

I have heard that you need to hang them upside down and a cut a small hole in each tip to let all of the blood drain..... Maybe I just dreamed that??? Not sure!!!

Any Taxidermists in the house???

Mark....

I guess I had always understood that antlers in velvet were bone in the process of formation. Cartilege (like your nose is made of) doesn't have any blood vessels in it, and cartilege doens't possess the ability to turn itself into bone. Under the velvet is a very soft and pourous bone that is in the process of growing. I don't know what would happen in anters were cut off the deer during growing stage.

That would have made a pretty mount. The antlers need to be injected with a 50/50 solution of formaldehyde and glycerin. Do this with a plastic syringe and good size needle. Use safety glasses and have the antlers hanging upside down. I have done a few road kill mounts, very pretty hide and short hair.
