What ammo with Rem 11-87 Sportsman Deer gun 12ga

SCOFFIN

Miles Coffin
I'm going to be buying this gun soon and want some suggestions as to what ammo to throw through it. Of course the Remington website is suggesting their "Premier® Core-Lokt® Ultra Bonded Sabot Slugs" but wanted to check with the other experts on this site to see if you had any other suggestions.

I know it's a crime, but this is the first gun I've bought in 25 years, so I'm sparing no expense. I'm wanting accuracy (I know most of that is me), but if I get the scope dialed in, I want ammo I can depend on. Also if I should use 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells.

I'm also considering putting some type of red dot scope on it and would like feedback on those also.

If you put a hastings rifled slug barrel on it, with cantileaver scope mounts and top that off with a 3x9x40 Bushnell elite 3200, Nikon Monarch, or Leupold anything you will have one deer killing machine. That's what we have for our doe shooting gun, we also shoot the 2 3/4 remington copper solids out of it. It is simply one of the most accurate set ups I have seen. 150 yard shots are no problem.

If anything, definitely go with the Hastings Barrel, you won't regret it, I guarantee it.

My opinion on Red Dot scopes is, I hate them.....

I haven't used these in a 12 gauge, but I use the Hornady XTP bullet in my muzzleloader. I've heard nothing but good about these 12 gauge shells, well, maybe some grumbling about the price: Hornady

I would stick to 2 3/4" shells. As far as a scope goes, if you are going to be doing drives, a red dot is super. If you are going to stand or still hunt, I would steer away from a red dot.

I shoot a 1187 with a remington full rifled barrel and shoot Winchester 2 3/4 hollow point slugs with great accuracy I shoot 1-1 1/2 " groups @ 100 yrds> You can spend more on slugs but why when you can get the same acc. with a cheaper slug???

I also have a 2 1/2 power scope that I feel is great for stand hunting or during a drive for running shots.

I have had excellent luck with federal premiums with Barnes Expanders. They shoot flat enough and are very consistent out of my winchester 1300 fully rifled slug gun. And they will pancake deer. I think the average distance deer traveled after being hit with these is less than 50 yards. Most go three feet, straight down. You are just going to have to try out all the different brands you can until you find one that works for you. I tried literally almost a dozen brands and configurations before I found out what my gun likes. And it really likes the Federal/Barnes combo. As far as 2 3/4 vs 3 inch I have yet to see a positive benefit to 3 in mags. More recoil without improved acuracy or ballistics has been the case for most guns I have seen.

My advice is don’t buy it, or better yet you can buy mine. I have 11/87 with Leopold scope and great rings, it shoots like poo. All of the high velocity rounds are all over the place. I have had good luck with the Winchester Supremes, they are like 1,500 fps and drop like a rock, but they are accurate. I killed 2 130s and a 145" this year with that combo here on the east coast.

I am going to sell the gun this year and buy the Savage bolt action with a Ziess Scope and Badger rings. It will shoot the high velocity slugs much better. I am not a big fan of the cantilever any more, I will be sitting in my stand and push on the rear of my scope and it moves, unacceptable!

People will tell you to buy different brands and see what shoots best out of your personal gun.
I get the best results from Winchester partician golds. Expensive, yes, but you'll be happy that you didn't skimp on an extra $2.00/shell when something worthwhile walks by.
I would recomend trying different brands in the off season.

I would go like Shed Hunter said, bolt action Savage or I use the Marlin 500 slugmaster w/1x4 Leupold scope 2 3/4 winchester partion gold slugs.A real tack driver.Unless you are going to use the 11-87 for other hunting I'am not fond of barrels that are not fixed.I had before a Rem.870 with a hastings barrel that was not consistant on groups,so I had the barrel and receiver drilled and pinned to keep the barrel from moving which helped.Sold that gun to a friend and bought the Marlin and and have not looked back. You may also look at the H&R singleshot, unless you think you need to throw alot of rounds up.

For me one shot one kill.

I shoot an 1187 with a fully rifled cantilever barrel. I shoot the Hornady xtp. they are 2 3/4 inch and they absoulutey rock. shot many deer with them. A little pricy but 150 to 200 yard shots no problem. I would steer away from the lead rifled slugs if you have a rifled barrel. These slugs are not designed to be shot through a rifled barrel. the soft lead fills in the rifleing of the barrel and ruins the barrel by turning it into a smooth bore. They may shoot good at first but over time it deterioates accuracy. I have seen it first hand. Not in my gun. I would also steer away from red dot scopes. get a quality 3x9x40 brand of your chose and you will not be dissapointed.
