I was packing up getting ready to leave and looking out towards the road I see 4 bucks chasing a doe. Two of the bucks were half racks. Those are the first deer I've seen on our home place all year! I was excited to head 15 miles away to my other place because I figured it'd be good. I got in the stand around 1:45. There was a small fawn under my stand and she saw me and I walked 5 yards from her and got in my stand with no issues. I recognized the fawn from the previous sits and when I've jumped her and two other does. Its basically just out of it's spots, not really but just saying that thing is tiny. She stayed under my stand oblivious to what just happened (which kinda shocked me) she was my stand buddy for the night. She went 40 yards and bedded down. I sat there just laughing and wishing I had a camera. Well, I rattled 3 or 4 times and nothing came in. Well around 5 I had 3 big/decent bucks (130s-150s) at 90 yards heading my way and they jumped the fence about 80 yards away. I saw two other bucks working scraps under my other stand 200 yards away. I figured it wouldn't hurt to rattle. I did and one of the three bucks came in at 50 yards and the others were at 60. They did a little tail flicker and kept walking and then ran. I thought that buck was going to come in! What does it mean when they do this? Is it to early there? Or is it to early in general?

Sorry I had to add my entire story, I'm just glad I'm seeing bucks!

What was the attitude of the deer like? If they stomped their feet and ran off, they caught your wind or saw you rattling. Give them a grunt or a snort wheeze next time, they will come running if they are interested!

It's hard to say without seeing it unfold. But I would guess they left because they didn't see anything. Try a Decoy..

Yep, if they didn't wind you or spot you, then I'd say they didn't have the visual they needed. I've grunted at several bucks and assuming they hear it, they start looking around for what made the noise. Unfortunately I've never had a decoy out to see if that would get them to commit. If they don't see anything, most have just walked off. Except the case of last year, when I got the attention of a good buck who was nosing around some does. He would look in my direction (not up, but just looking for another deer) every time I grunted, then look away, so I'd give him another grunt. I tried a couple buck grunts, then a doe bleat, and still the same reaction, until I could tell by his body language (getting a little antsy) that the light came on in his head and he quickly turned and trotted down into a timbered draw. I was done calling that night. Saw him walk out of the draw just before dark and lost sight of him 300-350 yds away. Decided not to try to educate him any more than I had already!
