What is this bird?

I had a guy go walking down a fenceline while I was goose hunting this weekend. On his walk back out this little orange blur of feathers came screaming across the field 3 feet off the deck. He hit the horseshoe pocket and I dumped him out of self defense as I thought it was a zombie... haven't seen one in YEARS?

Right place right time sounds like. This is my 2nd year in SD now and still don't get out and pheasant hunt as much as I should. Kind of sad that I live in the best area in the world for these pheasants and have maybe shot 12 or so in the last two years. Got out for the first time last weekend. Hopefully get out once more yet. We'll see

I believe it's the fabled and once thought extinct "Iowa Ditch Parrot". Good you didn't step on it. They are known to cause heart palpitations and cause grown men to wet themselves when stumbled upon. Watch out for the steel shot while enjoying the culinary delights of your harvest. :way:

I would LOVE to go to SD and pheasant hunt for a few days. Been a bucket list hunt for awhile.

The3 1/2 inch BB did put a smack down!

I'd rather shoot one of those than a hundred of them sky carp you were after. ;)

Brnc,

I am sitting here wondering when I can get out with this storm and shoot me a couple with my daughter. They are delicious. Canadian geese that is.

Crossed it off of my list 3 yrs ago. It was unbelievable. I shot my old 1187 more times in 4 days then it had been fired in the previous 10yrs. I kid you not there were times when we saw flocks of 500+ birds. You could also road hunt with decent success.

We had 12 guys and we were done hunting in 1 hour every day for 4 straight days.

I seen a bunch this year during shotgun 2. Probly around 40-50 in the 5 days. Theyre definetly making a comeback IMO

Well, not having a terrible snow/ice winter last year, then having a dry spring for nesting helped this year.

Another mild winter with "normal" spring precipitation should help them on their rebound.
