What kind of GPS would i need?

Hey everyone, i have never owned a GPS in my life. I probably will never buy one for my car but was thinking about getting a handheld GPS. What i would like is one that is pretty basic and inexpensive. Mainly just used to mark trailcamera locations and fishing structure waypoints. I don't need one that has road maps.

Just your basic GPS. Cheaper hopefully. What other features could i look for that i may be interested in using? I wont be using it to get from point A to point B. Remember, i don't know anything about them. I was even thinking of checking Ebay for a used one.

Anyone have any suggestions?

For my handheld, I use a Garmin etrex...mainly for ice fishing waypoints, and it's great. It was less than $200, simple to use, and serves it's purpose well. The newer ones allow use of the Lakemaster chips, which would be nice, but also more expensive.

If you going to use this thing for fishing a bunch, most definatly get one that can use a lakemaster chip. If you know where you fish all the time then dont bother with one.

Mine has the bread crumb feature that I found very useful when blood trailing and grid searches when you or one of your hunting buddies make less than staler shot.

I have and love the Garmin 60CSX, loads of features and accurate. I used it in New Mexico, Minnesota, and on through the south east USA with great luck

It has worked great for me when it comes to shed hunting as well.

I am thinking lake maps and depths would be nice. By what i have read about that, some say that some of the maps are basic and are not accurate, others say certain software has good really maps. Guess i will have to look some more.

Are the Lakemaster maps good?

The more i think about it, the more i would like some kind of lake maps too. Topo maps would be nice. The only thing i'm sure i wouldn't need it for is for traveling from point a to point b.

Garmin 60csx gets my vote. I have the 60cx and wish I would of bought the 60csx but I got a good deal. This thing locks on in about 15 seconds and works down in my basement. The topo graphs are amazing and I suspect the lakes would be too.

I'm not very familiar with their use. But if you mark a point, waypoint, and walk away or towards it will it show you the distance to and from a set spot? Correct? Is it in feet or yards if it does?

For example our farm is a rectangle but hasn't been surveyed in over 50 years. My side boundaries are marked by two stone walls running parrallel to eachother. The neighbor to one side of our property purchased the land behind us 2 years ago and now tries to say our land ends at a creek at the rear of the farm. It's not a boundary issue or arguement. Just two neighbors talking. I had seen maps years ago that showed we owned past the creek but those are long gone. Now it's more of a matter of principal. The neighbor who owns it had it surveyed about 15 yrs ago for logging and when I pointed out that he should pull out his maps he just blows it off.

Since I know we own to the middle of the road. I should be able to use two spots at both front corners to give us the distance between the front corners and since both walls are roughly parrallel I should be able to convert acres to feet and get the rough distance to the back corners.

I don't want to pay the expense of surveying since I previously tried to a few years ago having contacted several surveyers who were interested until they found out what township we live in. The previous township board gave anyone building new construction a hard time and their surveys an even harder time unless they used two that were resident.

Baran,

I have mine set up to measure in Feet. It can also measure acreage of a perimeter whether it is a rectangle or not. You are right though, you could measure right down to the T your property lines.

Thanks, I figured it was possible.
