Well to say I beat last year watching my buddy Dan kill two turkeys in the same morning last year you would think that I was nuts. (No comments Thomas)
On Saturday we were set up in my boy's (Michael's) spot where he shot his first bird ever in an earlier post.
Around seven we saw two toms with a hen 400 yards to the North and strutting
to my calls but no way were they going to leave her.
Well on Sunday night last day of the season I left it up to Aubrey (10 year old) and Michael (19 year old) to pick the spot where they wanted to hunt.
He picked the area where he saw the two the previous night.
We had two hens come to the field to our left and walk right straight South right where we were
the night before. When we could not see them anymore I then saw a tom standing right where
we were the night before.
I told Michael there is your tom buddy.
He looked at me and told me to get him over here.
I yelped and to my surprise he gobbled right back and strutted. I figured the hens were there
and he was strutting to them. Then he started walking and strutting coming towards us.
I figured what the hey the kids will at least get to see a show before he goes to roost.
The bird kept getting closer and strutting and gobbling once in awhile. Aubrey kept telling me Dad he
expects a response from you. I said well he is not getting one he is fine and knows where we are.
He went 250 yards to a grassy drainage area and stopped. He craned his neck and looked our way
and then started walking right back where he came from.
I hit him with a yelp and looked my way. I pulled the string on the DSD hen decoy to make her move twice
and he started walking our way again. I then thought this may just happen. :way:
When he got to 60 yards Michael said dad let me shoot him. Aubrey said Michael that is my bird.
When he got to 50 Michael said the same thing and Aubrey said Don't you dare Michael.
The bird started to parallel us and I thought he would walk right by us.
Michael said dad he is going to get away.
Decision time.
I said wait a second. Okay go ahead and take hiiiii... hold on he started to turn right to us.
He walked to within 10 and stopped.
He started to look a little nervous. Aubrey take him when you are ready.
She waited and boom... he got up booooom from Michael. The bird started to take flight
and flew 500 yards to where he came from and went out of site around the trees.
My heart dropped.
I said well we will need to go look for him.
We walked the calf high alfalfa with Michael on one side and Aubrey on the left picking flowers and
looking for 4 leaf clovers along the way 50 yards behind us. As we got to the end I looked ahead and there he
was laying dead in the alfalfa.
Instant relief and great job by the kids.
Sorry for the long post hope you enjoyed it. Now time to get them ready for deer season.
This was a great end to my season that will be hard to duplicate. Watching six birds go down missing one at 6:30 on the first day and watching my kids both shoot one (Michael earlier in the season) and tagging this bird the last day last half hour what a rush.
This definitely climaxes last years hunt.
