So this year will be my first year Turkey hunting on my own. I was curious what shot I should use for a 12ga shotgun. I doubt I can get out during youth season because of track and I'm having a hard time with my hip giving me problems (I'm already getting old!). I'll buy two dekes a jake and a hen I have my calls, camo, camera, blind, and place set out. I just don't know what shot I should use.

Show…
I use the hevi shot magnum blend. I would use 5 or 6 shot if you don't want to go with hevi shot. If you could get some different brands and see which one patterns best. Also put in a full choke or turkey choke if you can. Good luck!!

I like 6 shot hevi shot. Anywhere between 4 and 6 shot will work. Just make sure you know your effective range. That is the downfall to a lot of hunters.

5's.. #1 tip with it being your first year on your own.. don't move around a whole lot unless you know for a fact where a bird is.

Set up where you are seeing them fly down to and strut around every morning, and be patient. Afternoons can be real good to pattern as well.

5 or 6's.. I like as many bb's as possible, so, my pick is #6 3 1/2" Hevishot.. I've layed em out at 63 yds before with the #6's.. I wouldn't recommend shooting too much out past 40 though with anything for your first bird.. it's more fun to get em in closer and wack em at about 25

I've always used #4 shot and had great luck. When I lived in Iowa, I used the 3" Remington Nitro Mags and it was great. When I started hunting turkeys here in AZ, NM, and Texas, I switched to #4 Remington Hevi-Shot and then to #4 Wingmaster HD Turkey loads. Patterns are great through my turkey choke. My last bird was at 40 yards and he dropped straight in his tracks with no flopping. When I got to him, his skull was in pieces.

Like others have said, anything #4-#6 will work great as long as it patterns well from your shotgun. Biggest thing is what patterns well, so get to testing some loads! Good luck!

Watched a member here lay one down just shy of 80yds in KS two years ago, was freakin amazing. He was shooting 3 1/2" #5, I have always used this shot too, have hamered them out past 60 a couple of times. You shouldn't need any more than that.
