Well I did not draw my Iowa tag

, now I have to make plans for another hunt...

I am going to be bow hunting in Illinois from Nov.7th - Nov.19th

and if I get drawn for shot gun I'll do the 3 day gun hunt as well.

Now the question is where can I hunt and get tags over the counter that holds good quality whitetails

Not only that if I don't hunt at least 4 weeks with my bow my Doctor say's I could and most likely would come down with BOWTICULITIS.. Can't have that!!

Allthough I haven't hunted there, south east Nebraska has been cranking out some good ones the past few years. Bow tags are over the counter. South central Ne can also be good and there is a ton of public ground. The dates you are talking about would be after our rifle season is over.
 
Illinois bow tags are now by first come, first serve basis via telephone, no more over the counter. Check the Il DNR website at http://dnr.state.il.us/admin/systems/03/Hunting/NonResArcheryInfo.htm As far as places to go, unless you go through an outfitter, times are tough to find private ground. I live here and every time I inquire, I usually get a lease quote for 10-40 per acre. Pike Co is the # 1 county as far as outfitters but adams, mcdonough, brown, and calhoun counties are all great. I live in Hancock county and aside from the river area, it is as flat as a 2X10. One outfitter I know that has good quality deer on his place is www.eaglelakesoutfitters.com He has a 130 minimum with a fine of $100 per inch under 130. We have seen some great animals on and near his place last fall and a few tremendous sheds were picked up on his place this spring. I guess by the above post you need another state to hunt though.

I am all set in IL, I have been hunting the last 7 years there. I have a great setup that I really enjoy in IL. I'm kinda doing some home work to locate a place to hunt with quality deer after my hunt in IL.
It would have been Iowa but seeing that we did not draw we have to locate something to fill in the dates from Nov25 - Dec 4th. Qaulity deer is more important than numbers. Don't take it wrong but I think most hunters who travel long distances to hunt don't do so to hunt 1 1/2 year old bucks. I enjoy
trying to harvest 3 1/2 year olds and up . I'm not afraid to eat my tag, matter of fact some years I have gotten really sick on tag soup but my hunts were still full of great times.
I was concidering going to Ont. but with the USA not letting you bring back any part of a deer as it stands from Canada because of Mad Cow up there , we'll stick to USA. rather spend my money here anyway.
If you or anyone has any other suggestions we will be checking the site and putting together information on what our options are.

Let me know when you will be around as time gets closer. I would assume you stay in Quincy and I am 35-40 minutes north of there and could come down and join you for dinner some evening

Thanks we will look into this and if you have any other info about the hunting that would help please any help would be great. Are the farmers open to letting N/R hunt? and do you know the name of the state land you mention that has good quality hunting?

the pale . Do you hunt Iowa as well ?
Have you ever hunted Missouri ? Or know anyone who has? It would seem like at least a good spot for us to look at?
Do you own your own hunting ground ? Or are you hunting statelands ? We hunted Site M our first 3 years out but the hunting pressure increased so much that it was no fun... Sure saw some large Buck on it how ever...

Missourri is where I would go, I have a spots that I hunt that are 2 to 10 miles from the Iowa border and is some of the best hunting that I have ever had to hunt on. You would be atleast a week after gun season then, I would check it out.

What are the chances of us gaining permission to hunt on private land?
Can we buy our tags over counter..
What part would you recommend keeping in mind we are more interested in qaulity deer than numbers. Northeast or Northwest border ???

Last year was the first year I have actually hunted there and I was impressed to say the least. I would say hunt anywhere within 60 miles of the border. You can buy your tags over the counter, after rifle season I would say that most people would let you hunt. I rarely have been turned down when asking. I hunted CRP last year did not see huge #'s of deer but saw several shooter bucks in 2 days of hunting, I am headed back this year. I guess just knock on doors and see what happens, i had good luck doing that anyway.
 
Gary,,,,,,,,,. Do you by some outside chance hunt with or have you ever hunted with Outdoor Partners and Jason ,,,,, In Illinois?????? If so I think I may have met you in 2000 Nov.... My bud and I hunted with Jason and there was a few guys from Vermont who talked of a guy named Gary....My bud took a 125 ish 8 and I passed on every buck I called in, 9 total in the 6 days we were there that year. If it is you let me know . I would like to hear how Jason is doing as he was just starting his operation back then. I would like to hunt with him again.

Yes I sure do I book up 6 or 8 nov. spots and then fill spots with guys who want to hunt with our group.. I take from the shotgun season back two weeks for 6 hunters. I get them filled by end of Feb or March most years.I can get some gun hunts for hunters now as well.

I have drawn for Iowa for a few years straight now and would plan a hunt if I could get my group on the same farm we hunted in 2000 with Jason for next fall.We have 3 guys and the farm we hunted and learned would be perfect for us.... If nothing else get me Jasons Phone number or mailing address.

I don't know .... I just had that feeling you were the Gary from Vermont I knew.
