Where would you go?

Iowa1

New Member
I have been working 100 hours a week all summer and had three weekedns off since april. I am going to disappear for at least three weeks in November and I am trying to decide where to go.

I have a preference point in Iowa and Kansas this year, so those are out. I would like to keep this trip under $2500 or so but I am a little flexible. I am primarily interested in bowhunting but I would consider a gun trip. I am not very interested in 125-inch 8-pointers, I am looking for a legitimate chance at a 150 or so.

Looking at SD, ND, WI, IL, OK. If it was you, where would you go? Please be specific with location even outfitter names if you have had experience with them. Thanks in advance.

You may need that three weeks just to sleep...

Yeah, then you can dodge high power bullets during the rut.....

Go to Illinois or hunt Missouri before the rifle season opens.

These four states may fit your needs, I have hunted them. If you choose an outfitter in any of these states make sure to tell them what your expectations are and if their properties can fit you needs.

If it were me I would not over look the do it yourself public land hunts.

The Black Hills have some really nice chocolate antlered mature bucks. There are a lot of mature bucks in these states.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if it is too late to get a nonresident tag for several of these states.

Wyoming: Northeast part of the state, Campbell County, Sundance or Hewlett area, vast tracts of Black Hills Public Land & fairly easy access to private land.

Montana: Southeast part of the state along the Wyoming Border South of Broadus. There is also some great deer hunting around Havre and Chinook in the middle of the state up near the Canadian Border.

South Dakota: Anywhere along the Wyoming border in the Black Hills, there is a lot of Public Land out there. Access to private is very limited unless one is willing to pay a minimal a trespass fee. However, you can find landowners that will allow nonresidents to hunt without paying a fee.

Missouri: Northeast and Southwest part of state just South of Iowa Border. Access is usually difficult to obtain.

Good Luck with your hunt sounds to me like you need a vacation.

For not a whole bunch more than $2500 you could likely end up in Saskatchewan. I think 7 day hunts run around the $3000 mark, that is mind not with the plane ticket to Saskatoon but all inclusive from there on.

Then again maybe sitting in -20 temps from dark to dark may not be up your alley either.

Combine that with relatively low deer #'s, mostly gun hunting and it may seem even worse.

But I bet it would be a truly unique hunting experience for you and believe it or not, when hunting the forest bucks any buck that steps out could just be a sight to behold. I for one.....love it!

Thanks for the input so far. The idea of hunting Canada intrigues me. However it would be tough for me to sit in a wooden box for eight hours a day in zero weather. Not sure how much I could put up with, unless I was pretty certain that a couple days of it was going to get me a shot at a big buck.

Year before last when I did not draw an Iowa tag I went to northeast Missouri and I wasn't impressed but the outfitter I went with was just getting started with bowhunting. His stands were placed for gun hunters and it took a lot of work to get him to understand that I needed to make some changes. In the end I placed a couple of my own stands. In five days the biggest buck I saw was a 140-ish ten that I didn't get a shot at. The guy was nice as can be but he just didn't understand the needs of bowhunting. He would drive right to the stand to drop you off and pick you up. ANd he disregarded wind direction when choosing stands. Came home emptyhanded.

Anyone know much about northeastern Nebraska or SE Minnesota?

Hunt Nebraska is an outfitter in SW Nebraska. I used to guide there and they have killed some great whitetail. They are probably booked for the rifle season but archery could work and even the muzzleloader season which is the whole month of december. It has been about 4 years since I was there but there prices were around $2500. They have a lodge, hotel rooms across the parking lot, 3 meals a day, guide, stands and tons of river ground to hunt. They do it right. 1-800-486-8632. Johnny Hemelstrand is one of the owners and books the hunts.

I'm going mule deer hunting in SD in November for 5 days. There are some frickin monsters out there. Let me know if you want some more info on it. I'm going out around the 5th or so.

One place no one considers is Maine. Some pretty good sized deer at a reasonable value. Problem is getting there.

Bucks and beards outfiters in nw missouri. I know for a fact that this place is awesome. Don't expect to see a ton of deer but the bucks you do see are whoppers. They also bring in very few hunters on 6000 acres. I think last year their archers had around 65% success. Now that is real success not pampered numbers. But anyway good luck with your decision and hope you have a good time anywhere you go after working so much.

Well thanks for the input guys. I found a cancellation hunt in SE Kansas with the transferrable tag and all, and I got a pretty good deal on it. Going mid-November and I will be in camp when some of the guys with Jay Gregory will be there, which is kinda cool.

I'll let you know how I do, and once again thanks for the input.
