whitetail In Iowa Alert

Please forward to anyone concerned about whitetail hunting in Iowa.

The Iowa State Senate is going to vote on SF 421 a bill which will allow the
enforcement of all pen-raised "farm" deer and elk to be taken away from the
Department of Natural Resources and given to the Department of Agriculture.

This will allow deer and elk ranchers to continue to operate as they did
before the recent outbreaks of Chronic Wasting Disease recently seen in
Wisconsin and Minnesota. It's no surprise that the deer and elk ranchers
have already pushed this bill through The State House and now it's ready to
go through the Senate. I have some contacts within the DNR and they are
horrified at the ramifications of this bill, but cannot campaign against it.

This bill greatly increases the chances of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to
be spread through the state because it make no provisions on the interstate
transport of deer or elk--which is how Chronic Wasting Disease has spread
across the country.

Further more, this bill specifically calls for the creation of a Governing
council to oversee the entire farm deer program for the Department of
Agriculture. The council will be comprised of individuals, "that must be
must be actively engaged in the production of farm deer."

This means that important biological decisions--such as how to protect
Iowa's deer herd against diseases like CWD, will now be handled by a
committee of deer and elk ranchers INSTEAD of DNR biologists. This is
putting the fox in charge of the hen house! Elk ranchers have already
brought three CWD-infected elk into Iowa, how many more will they import
into Iowa once they are in charge of their own regulations?

SF 421 is a terrible piece of legislation. Every Iowan who has an interest
in the future of whitetail hunting in their home state needs to take action.
SF 421 is a direct threat to the Iowa whitetail herd and the millions of
dollars brought into the state from whitetail hunter and those Iowa
companies involved in the hunting industry.

Please contact your State Senator right away and ask him or her to defeat SF
421.
