Wisconsin's CWD proposal

I know this is and Iowa web site but I thought you would be intested in reading how the DNR proposes to help eradicate this problem in south central Wisconsin.
http://www.wisconsinstatejournal.com/local/24757.html

I am all for it. They have to do something to keep it in one area and try to eliminate it if possible. If this was goign to be held after the antlers were fully developed I would have to say that there would be a great possiblity that a buck would be taking in this area of WI that would surpass that current World Record. But we will never know. They have to do it now in order to keep the fawns from dropping and spreading it that much more and I think the DNR realizes this.

Anyway take a minute and read the article. Also there was an audio link posted on BowSite.com from the meeting last night.

I hope Iowa doesn't ever have to face this problem. The residents and non residents have to help you keep your deer in check.

Wisconsin found out about the CWD problem by doing random sampling at check stations. I think Iowa needs to have check stations. If not caught early, it can destroy the entire deer herd. Wisconsin believes they caught it early, and they are planning to kill every deer in the 280 sq mile target area. The goal is to have zero deer left in the target area. Surrounding counties will also be subject to liberal harvests. This is not subject to a core area. Hunting will start next week in the 280 sq mile area, in order to kill every deer.
Imagine what would happen if this came to Iowa? Who knows, maybe CWD is already present in IOWA. Iowa DNR needs to implement check stations this fall for sampling of CWD.

This spring the DNR and the DOT have implemented a check on road killed deer. I know in talking with Dale Garner, DNR biologist and the point man for CWD in Iowa, that some DOT and DNR biologists have received training and more people are to follow.

Does killed will be checked for fetuses which will also be checked. A case in Nebraska looks like the first transmission between mother and offspring (horizonal transmission). In the past all known transmissions were from animal to animal (vertical transmission).

This fall the DNR will start voluntary check stations for hunters to turn in their deer to be tested. That's all I know as of now.

My only worry is that it could be an epidemic if it went undetected for a couple of years. Iowa check stations are inevitable, but I know there is a reluctance to have them. In Wisconsin, check stations are run by both DNR and private businesses. The private businesses are paid 25 cents per deer checked. With Iowa and the current politaical budget mess, I would hate to see the deer herd wiped out by CWD over a dollar value. Gee, if the deer got CWD in Iowa and we had to kill them, Iowa couldn't be able to rip off the non residents with the high fees?

There shouldn't be any resistance to implementing check stations in Iowa. Its the way here in Wisconsin since I started hunting over 20 years ago. Its no problem at all. You get a deer, you tag it, then you have three days to stop by a check station. There is one in nearly every small town -- usually a gas station or a bar. You walk in, fill out your license stub (basically just your name and what deer management unit you shot the deer in). Someone at the station comes out and verifies what you got (antlered buck or antlerless) and then puts a metal, non-removable tag on the deer. It never takes more than a few minutes, even during the busy times of the gun season.

As for stopping CWD, I wouldn't hold my breath. Yes, the DNR has a plan, but they still have to sell it to the locals. So far, they are not liking the taste of the prescribed medicine. Enjoy your hunting now gentlemen. Maximize every day you have in the woods. If this can happen here, it can happen anywhere. You now have CWD in states on both sides of you. My guess is eventually it will "fill in the blank."

And, as for a world record, the plan as its been proposed will open up rifle hunting in the CWD zone starting on October 24 through the end of January. That will mean there will be rifles allowed in Wisconsin's second best trophy buck area during the entire rut! No question, its possible some bucks will be taken that would challenge the state record. A world record? While there are some dandies, I don't know about that. The county non-typical record is about 231". There have been about 8-10 200" nontyps taken, but from the most recent book, There's never been a 180" typical shot in the county. Nevertheless, there are some decent genetics there, so you never know.

CWD is the scariest freakest thing that could happen to our deer hunting world. It bothers the hell out of me to even think about the ramifications.

Can you imagine making sure every deer in a 280 square mile area was WASTED!!!!!!

I am not sure what the answer is or could be but more & more evidence continues to point somehow to game farm elk herds.
