Well yesterday started off pretty good. I used two vacation days for Thursday and Friday. Thursday I saw good activity, a couple shooters, and had a pretty good day. Friday started off with some fur in the traps, and good movement in the morning sit. I got out around 11 to move some trap locations and was headed to a different spot in the afternoon. I packed up the backpack, climber, and waders to get to a hard to access place. I needed the waders after the recent rains, but wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to hunt this prime spot with the correct wind. Anyway I huff it into the area which is about a mile. I get set up in the tree and sit for a couple minutes. I was a little overdressed due to the wind, and my shoulders hated me for packing in the climber and backpack. I decided I better pull my bow back to make sure I didn't need to shed a layer of clothing. I make sure nothing is coming and once I realized the coast was clear I started to pull back. Everything was going fine until I got the bow to just about where it hits the wall and then it felt like a grenade went off in my hand. For a second I was stunned. Something had slapped me in the neck, and then I looked at my bow. The string was in two pieces and I was missing another piece. I had no idea what happened, I just knew I was in trouble. I climb to the ground to get my bearings and look my bow over. I didn't look closely, thought my string had just broken, (which was weird because it wasn't worn at all really) just knew that at the time I didn't have a bow. I huff it out, and as soon as I hit my vehicle I start making phone calls to find another bow. All my buddies still have valid tags, and I knew it would take time to get another string in. I have more vacation days set up for next week and was starting to panic. Once I got home I realized I would need to purchase another bow and was in a hurry to go look around for used bows. I call the bank and transfer money into my "toy" account so I can purchase something to get me back in the tree. I had to take my billfold out and read her my card number so she could do that. Once that was done I was gonna head in and shower and go bow shopping. As soon as I slammed my door I knew I had messed up. Locked the truck door with the keys in the ignition. No big deal, I got a spare in my billfold and my billfold is.... laying in the passenger seat. That set me off. I pry looked like a little two year old out in the street cussing and slamming my fists on the hood of my truck. So 90 minutes and 50 dollars later I have my truck unlocked and its time to go bow shopping. I had called around and had people trying to sell me either 10 year old Jennings and Dartons or brand new Carbon Elements. Finally my brother called me back and talked some sense into me and told me I'd be an idiot for buying another used bow and having two at the end of season, when I fully intended on buying a new bow next year. He told me to just bite the bullet and buy a new bow. I must have been flustered because as soon as he said the words I wondered how I hadn't thought of that. So I called up to Sportsmen's Unlimited in Waukon and asked Randy a bunch of questions. He gave me the basics of what I needed to know and gave me Justin's phone number and to call him once he got out of the tree. I phoned him later in the night and as soon as I got off the phone with him I was relieved. I went up there this morning, dropped some coin and walked out of his shop a proud owner of a 2013 Elite Hunter. We also found out that one of the grooves on my cams had turned over which caused the string to come out and become cut. I had planned on buying that bow anyway this spring, but bought an AR instead (Now I have both). The guys at the shop were very good to deal with and straight shooters. Justin got me dialed in before I left and a few arrows when I got home confirmed that I was good out to 30 and I was in stand tonight by 130. So once again, thanks Randy and Justin at Sportsmen's Unlimited. You just gained myself and 2 brothers as future customers.
Sorry for the vent.
