Deer rampage at clinic ends with buck killed

A five-point deer crashed through a window Monday at a Dubuque medical laboratory, running around frantically before barricading itself in a restroom stall where authorities sedated and later killed it.
The bloodied deer slipped repeatedly on the tile floor as workers and patients scrambled out of its way. Authorities shot it with a tranquilizer and hauled it away to be euthanized, officials said. No one was hurt.
“We didn’t feel it was prudent to release the animal considering the extent of its injuries,” said Brian Preston, executive director for Dubuque County’s conservation board. He said the deer, about 1 years old, was cut in the head from the double-paned window’s broken glass.
The incident began Monday morning at Dubuque Internal Medicine. The deer crashed through the window and seemed “spooked” as it tried to gain traction on the floor, said Megan Schmitt, who works in patient registration.
“We just pretty much all ran and made sure our doors were locked,” she said.
Authorities later arrived and sedated the deer, about an hour after it crashed into the building.
Patients were temporarily turned away as workers cleaned up the mess, including broken glass, bloody walls and a broken light fixture in the restroom.
“It was fortunate that no one was injured in the incident,” said Terry Tobin, Dubuque’s assistant police chief. “For the deer not only to go running through the lobby area, but to be confined in the restroom that had the door for officials to have access to administer the tranquilizer, that was fortunate.”
