Youth Guns

My oldest is going to turn 6 this fall and i am starting to think about youth guns. I don't know what way i should go. Blackpowder for deer and shotgun for turkey. Or a 20g combo.

My son is 11, and I found at 6, 7 and even 8 the best thing to help him learn how to shoulder a gun, hold steady, squeeze the trigger, etc. was a Ruger 10-22. He still loves to plink away with that thing, and it undoubtedly helps his marksmanship with other weapons.

But as for now, he shoots my old trusty Knight Disc rifle for youth deer season and a Browning youth model BPS 20 gauge for turkey and pheasant. I like the BPS because of the thumb safety and bottom eject...good for both righties and lefties. Good luck...the fun is really just beginning for you :way:

I just bought a 20 guage 870 compact for my kids. The compact allows you to add extensions to the stock as they get older. They are supposed to have a softer recoil pad than the 870 youth.

I added a cantilever barrel and a red dot. I have heard the red dot is easier for the kids than a scope.

My wife has that one in a camo version....very nice problem free gun for her so far. It feels like a toy! It will be perfect for my son when he starts out but I also agree with the recommendation for a 22...that's what I started on and have no doubt the thousands of bullets I put through that thing growing up helped tremendously. (just my .02)...what you should do is just buy him one of each. :D

Shotting sticks!! great tip! good or bad, we have also never had our youth hunters shoot with a full charge or magnum load other than hunting.... Skeet loads and for muzzleloader practice, the .22 mag. Same concept, no scare. Granted make sure they do know the ins and outs of the weapon they will be using.

We have stuck with the muzzleloader because they can use their youth tag during the muzzleoader seasons and one of the shot gun seasons if unfilled. So the muzzleoader covers any of the seasons. The Rossi miniloader (muzzleloader) is the same size as the Mossberg. This Mossberg is tempting me for bird hunting http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=41
. Like a holiday around our house waiting for Saturday :way:!

I'm extremely jealous of you all being able to take your children out at an age earlier than we are allowed to hunt big game.

Good luck to all of you.

Thanks for all the advice!:way: I already have a ruger 10/22 that he can start with. Travis, i might have to stop by and see that miniloader sometime.
