Thoughts on QDM (Quality Deer Management) in Iowa?????????????

I couldn't agree more. Earn a buck is not what you think. The first year we had It, my neighbors shot 5 button bucks off 50 acres and then shot two more out of my field just to earn buck tags they will turn around and use on another ratchet head. My hunting area hasn't recovered yet and I have...

    Best camera for the money?

How do you set the field scan properly. I Have a new bushnell 2011 model and want it to take pics every minute from 4 pm to 5 pm each day. Mine is taking pics all day long, eating cards and batts very fast. What did I do wrong?

    Best Back Pack SPRAYER?? STIHL?

Sligh1, You may want to take a look at the Dramm battery powered backpack sprayer. I have ordered one upon seeing them demonstrated for my greenhouse business. I do not have it yet. A little pricey, but another option at least. It has a better adjustment of droplet size than my hand pump...

    Swapping out sprayer nozels

I have the same model. I have found that I get good coverage as long as winds are fairly calm and the outside nozzles are tilted upward properly. i don't have any experience with using a different style nozzle, however i think it would work. You may need to recalibrate the sprayer though to...

    Switchgrass

Dbltree, The seeding rate was about 10 lbs per acre. It is a fertile bottom field which like many places in the mid-west has received more than its fair share of rain. I will update next year as to how it recovers. I think I may avoid the urea for a year or two. Thanks for posting the pics.

Iowa Land Sales Report A good resource I have found and used is the Iowa Land Sales Report. It is a bit pricey, but there are discounts for multiple counties and they give you details of recent sales. I have been looking pretty hard for some ground in S. Iowa the past six months and most...

    Switchgrass

My second year CIR has taken a beating with the wind and rain and over half of it has fallen over. I expected it to recover by now, but it is still laying sideways. Is there a chance it will recover and if not will it hurt the stand in upcoming years due to smothering. Has anyone else...

    Switchgrass

Second Year CIR I seeded my CIR switch last season and saw decent first year growth. There are some weedy areas coming fast that I would like to get a handle on. Can I use gly/atrazine again this year-if so what is my time-frame left to avoid damaging the new growth. Also is there a chance...

    land prices

Thanks everyone, all of your comments are very helpful. To follow up, is it difficult to start pine seedlings in these areas or will they be clipped by the deer right away. It would seem that since there is not much timber to start with on an open pasture farm, the trees might stand a chance to...

Pasture Farm I'm hoping to purchase a farm in southern Iowa sometime in the next year or so. Do any of you have experience with buying an old pasture farm with little timber and converting it to Deer habitat. Using Switchgrass, trees etc, how long does it take before a real change takes place...
