my first bow deer, first night of season

It was the last day of youth season, and the first day of the 2011 bow season. I took my little sister out to a farmers ground that morning to try to get her first deer, after sitting for about and hour and a half a little spike buck came through, she raised the gun and dropped him, when its...

Iowa county by county harvest data

I know this isn't new, I just can't find it (which makes me less than happy with our DNR!!!). I was wondering what the site was that showed the deer harvest county by county. Thanks!

    DNR's harvest report chart

When you put the numbers together, it's pretty amazing to think that the buck to doe kill ratio is almost one to one when you consider the number of doe tags the state continues to crank out!!!

    Sad

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20111208/BUSINESS/312080048/Farmland-sale-sets-Iowa-record-20-000-per-acre Since this thread started, I thought I would throw something else out there...a new land price record of $20,000/acre. I heard a long time ago that there are two things that...

    Unused Deer Tag Survey

Everywhere I go, I hear about the numbers being down (it has been very true in our group this year). I was thinking of starting a thread to see how many tags your group started their gun seasons with, and how many unused tags you had left at the end of the season. Also, if you are willing to...

    Movement Update...

I sat out last evening and you would have thought the deer would be moving everywhere as cool and calm as it was here in SE Iowa...and the only thing moving were two yearlings just before dark. It looks like the week after Thanksgiving in Iowa...meaning it seems like they seem to flip the love...

    The Missed shot

Oh, there will be a time you will quit kicking yourself, but that miss will become a part of who you are as a person and hunter. Two big ones I had marginal hits on (both lived and I got to see them both again...both bigger, but never another shot), and a couple that have walked out of my life...

    Movement Update...

I was wondering if anyone got the chance to get out the past couple of days, and if so, what was the movement like?!

Rage 3 blade deer recovery question?

Scooter, What kind of fixed heads are you shooting? I have had some of those same issues when shooting some of the newer "micro" typed fixed head (meaning around 1 1/16" inch heads). They fly great, but I wasn't overly excited about the lack of blood. I never did lose a deer, and always had...

    Thanksgiving Doe Season question...

Can someone please remind me why the DNR thought this was such a great idea?! This has got to be a poachers dream come true! I was also wondering how many of you heard slugs banging yesterday.

    Movement Update...

I ran into a guy last night at the fur shed who watched a buck breed a doe last evening. I also saw two sets of twins (all were female yearlings) feed without a mature doe in sight which made me wonder if mama hadn't ran off for a little lovin?!

    Movement Update...

I sat yesterday morning, and saw one mature buck around 6:50, 3 yearlings later, and one dink buck at 9:30. I saw zero mature does which was surprising because the two days before that ... that is about all I saw.

Trail cam photos of coyotes killing adult buck

For the guy who had the antis following him into his public hunt stand the other evening yelling "Darwin Darwin"...maybe they should watch this video and see how nature "culls" the herd. I'll guarantee my broadhead is more humane!!!

    Movement Update...

I could only sit until 9, but thought that is better than nothing. I sat between two bedding areas and had a group of 9 (does with female fawns) get bounced back and forth four different times, but never did see the buck that was bumping them....I know, I know...he's moving mid morning like...

Ozonics review- 2 hunts, 26 deer

What I find interesting is someone asked earlier if there were others who had tried this product (of course I was wondering the same thing), and of those who have tried it, both are trying to get their money back. One thing I have found interesting in my 30+ years of bowhunting about...

    Movement Update...

I have seen more deer movement on my last two sits ... Friday evening, and last evening than I have in weeks. I had a mature 150s run the does out of the bedding area last evening around 4 and then walked circles at 40 yds around a younger buck that came in, then he stood and watched three...

    Movement Update...

I checked a few traps this morning with my son and bumped a doe with a buck in a set aside field. They were a longggg ways from any tree lines or anything like that...just tucked in out of the wind, but they were still very much together. Like everyone says it looks like the rut is still...

    Movement Update...

Bear...I'm not sure how to call it. There are a lot of does taken around here, and the bucks are managed pretty intensely for a couple miles both directions. But like everyone knows...one hot doe a half mile from where you are hunting this time of year and it can look like an all girls...

    Movement Update...

This is the first time I have had this happen since the rut started in early Nov., but had a lot of does and fawns come out to the corn field without a care in the world. They weren't nervous or goofy, and there wasn't a single buck dogging them in the field. I did see three dinks check out...

    Movement Update...

I didn't go out yesterday morning because I had to come out of the stand at 8, and then from 6:30-7:30 sat inside and watched deer move all over. Today was the same scenerio, except today I figured why no go ahead and enjoy a couple hours of watching Iowa come to life even if I did have to beat...
