Congrats! I miss those days of adventures with my son. You have a lot to look forward to Curtis, that handsome young man will have the girls knocking on your door too ;) as well as great hunting adventures.
Yep, been doing that for years. Every path I made the deer used it immediately. I usually trim them back in August that gives me access to play any wind to hunt transition areas from bedding to food sources.
That's one species I have growing and intend to plant more. I do want to look into dwarf Chikapin and pears. I have apples, the neighbors' pears draw them in like magnets, but most have dropped come archery season. Have plenty of crabapples but want to plant some good thermal cover that grows...
I'll definitely check it out since I reside in Pa. They have made a lot of changes over the years, the only one I liked is with antler restrictions. The rest is bullcrap....
I have so many trees down the past year I don't know where to start. I'll be busy cleaning up deadfalls until late spring...2025!
What's a good variety of trees to plant that won't take 15 years to make a difference in habitat? I'll be 69 next month and
would like to see the fruits of my labor...
Absolutely! Since I butcher my own that's not an issue but every buck that I've taken to a taxidermist the rack goes with me! Even hunting out of state, I ship the rack back when they are ready to mount them and pick them up the next hunting trip.
The cold blast won't be here until Tuesday/Wednesday but very wet and muddy. Monday is the last day of late season in PA. In the meantime, I'm sweeping nightcrawlers off the walks and watching the plants blossom in mid-January, WTF!
I'd be livid as well! Great buck, hope it works out. I don't take mine to a locker to avoid things like that and not knowing 100% if it's my deer or not. If it's worth mounting I'll cape my own out and keep the skull or have them cape and cut the antlers out before I leave just to make sure.
In the 25 years I trapped I had one deer get caught in a coon set along a small stream. Don't know how long it took to get out but man it tore up the area. Very rare but it happens. Not sure how to avoid it 100%, they are curious animals.
