    Twist of Fate

Congrats, iowadave! He's a dandy. It's a treat to watch 'em go down in view of the stand you're in. No wondering if the shot was good enough. No sleepless night if you back out in order to return in the morning. The smile says it all. Nicely done! iowaPete

    Deer stand surprise

And I used to freak out when a squirrel got a couple feet away from me while I was on stand. Sheesh!

    Hunting In Warmer Weather

I help the local farmer get his crops out of the field. That'll concentrate the deer back into the timber where they're MUCH more vulnerable to a dose of high velocity carbon poisoning. :D

What days off (vacation) are you taking this fall?

November 3rd through the 13th, then the whole week of Thanksgiving. If that won't do it, I don't know what will!

    Fencing Article

I'd rather NOT have cattle on my property. Maintaining fence is just another one of those chores that needs done from time to time. It's not complicated work. It's also not glamorous work. But, like mowing the lawn, it always gives a feeling of satisfaction when it's all done and done well...

    Licklighter is gone

Let's face it, no matter who they pick, it can't be any worse than it is right now, can it? iowaPete

Deer Loin Recipe (Plz add more!)

bowhuntr311 has hit the nail on the head with this one. My family loves this recipe. Takes a bit of work to do, but is worth it. I would add one thing here: sometimes (not often, mind you) there will be a roll or two left over after the meal is done. I've frozen these and nuked 'em in the...

    DNR Banning Mineral

I understand the desire to see all the potential trophies passing through a property. I also understand that drawing deer in with a tasty, simple, easily-provided snack helps toward that end. I don't agree with bait being available 24/7/365 in our state. In the years I've lived and hunted...

    Oops!

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this. Do y'all think it'll be a slap on the wrists? iowaPete

    Beman Straightness

Interesting question. Does anyone know if certain brands of carbon arrows tend to bend more at the ends vs the middle of the shafts?? I was always under the assumption that there were imperfections of allignment throughout the entire length of the shaft. I couldn't cut off the "inferior bit"...

    Storing Broadheads

Mine come off the arrow and get placed into a fishing tackle box that I use for my small bits of archery stuff. I keep all kinds of things in it, but the bh's get a spot all their own. iowaPete

    tree survival

Do you think the willow trees you planted had a chance to establish themselves? If so, the chances the tree will recover are quite good. I'll be interested to hear how they grow for you this year. Best of luck, iowaPete

    Pumpkins???

We've had a pumpkin patch on our property for the last 5 years. We get a nice production, but I agree that there are far better ways to use that ground to plant an appealing food for deer. Pumpkin vines take up an incredible amount of space and do not usually produce pumpkins in tight...

    Late Antlerless Season

So far, half the respondents are in favor of eliminating the season. Interesting.... iowaPete

Got my deer mount back today!

2-3 month turnaround time sounds reasonable for a taxidermist who does the work full-time. The taxidermist I used in 2007 received my buck on November 1st and had it back to me by February. iowaPete

    1st Bobcat

That's terrific! I've heard 'em at night. One of the more hair-raising cries I've ever experienced. My neighbor describes it best - "Sounds like a woman being strangled." Gets me jumpy just thinking about it. Congrats again! iowaPete

    Season Recap

A lot of great memories for you - Congrats! I feel your pain about the end of bowhunting season. I sat in the stand that last evening, just hoping for a few more minutes of available light. Saw 24 deer the last evening I hunted, but none came into shooting range.... iowaPete
