This article was posted on MO Whitetials and I figure this is another good place to share it. They found that 25-30 percent of the white oaks produced 80-90 % of the white oak acorns over the 3 year period. That tells me it is possible to have more more screening cover, browse, native shrubs etc, while still have lots of acorns off of far fewer oaks by identifying the ones that produce the most acorns. They found that not all will produce even with good crowns so it may be a good idea to walk the timbers each fall and see just how many produce over a 3-5 year span, identify them and cut out the rest if other options are available.
