Iowa Announces Third Quail Forever Chapter

Bloomfield, Iowa - February 5, 2010 - Hunters and conservationists in Davis County, Iowa, have formed the state's newest Quail Forever chapter. Named Davis County Quail Forever, the chapter - the state's third - initiated to protect, restore and enhance habitat for an Iowa species in great need, the bobwhite quail.

As a Quail Forever chapter, the Davis County group will utilize Quail Forever's local approach to wildlife habitat conservation. Unlike other national conservation organizations, Quail Forever giveslocal Quail Forever chapters the ability to decide how 100 percent of their fundraised dollars are spent. This local control gives chapters and members the ability to make things happen for wildlife in their communities, while belonging to a national organization that gives wildlife and conservation a voice in Washington, D.C.

Davis County is found in southeast Iowa and borders Missouri. Once a quail stronghold, quail numbers have declined in Davis County much like they have across Iowa. In fact, in the early 1970s,Iowa hunters harvested 1.1 million quail. Recently, that harvest total has dropped to approximately 50,000. The decline is due to long-term changes in agricultural practices and most recently the loss of thousands of acres from the federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

"Our newly formed chapter is already growing its member base, and we have added new chapter committee members," said Josh Batterson, a Bloomfield resident and president of the Davis County Quail Forever chapter. "Our main focus right now is to inform the public about our chapter and what we stand for in terms of wildlife habitat conservation." The chapter is also a resource for area landowners interested in improving wildlife habitat on their properties. "Many people are unaware of the programs offered by the government to assist landowners in their management goals," said Batterson, "We want to encourage landowners to take advantage of these programs and help re-establish quail populations in the region."
