Oats

What part of a diet would oats be for deer? Do they only eat while its green or even after it turns? My farmer has a field of oats out now that they are going to harvest sometime in july(if it makes) and they are going to reseed right after they harvest...so would it be better to have the new green shoots, the already matured oats, or plant some brassicas?

They will eat the new growth oats much the same as new wheat. If the area is available I would still put in some brassicas for late season

Oats are an amazing winter food source. The deer hammer them where I'm from soon after the first snow

Oats are my favorite cereal grain to plant for deer. They will eat them from the time they sprout until they are all gone. I usually plant some every year..either alone or mixed with brassicas
