Land of the Whitetail
So I’m sure you saw my other post from just the other day about losing permission on my turkey spot.

Well I was able to find another place. It’s close to my parents so I figured I’d visit them a bit and see if I might have some luck at this new place. I’d never hunted there and had no idea if there are birds there or not.

I got up early and got there just before 5. I knew where I wanted to set up from looking at satellite maps. Shortly after set up I hear gobbling a few hundred yards away, awesome because now I know there are birds here!! There were 3 for sure, maybe 4 toms gobbling. They gobbled consistently until about 630. I could tell when they pitched down because the gobbling sounded like a different tone, by 7 they were done. Nothing came to my calls or anything.

In the meantime I saw 7 bucks(velvet already growing), a coyote, pheasants cackling, and a woodchuck climbing a tree 30 yards in front of me(I didn’t know they climbed trees) so I was really enjoying the morning. About 10:00 I look up and spot a hen moving along the tree line. I try some soft yelps and clucks at her but she cuts across the cornfield. As soon as she is out of sight I hear a gobble from the direction she came from, then another. I spot the Tom about 200 yards out in front of me across a creek. I throw some yelps at him and he gobbles back. Then he goes down in the creek bed so i yelp some more. He comes up out and heads my direction. It took about 5 minutes of calling to get him to come over, but once he saw my decoys he came in fast. I got the gun up and watched him come right up to my Jake decoy. I let him bump it and then he jumped on it. I decided I better shoot in case he spooks after he knocked it out of position. I had my decoys about 15 yards in front of me.

22.4 pounds, each spur was 1 1/8, and 10 3/4 beard.

I’m glad I stuck with it, what an awesome hunt. It’s so much when you call them in and seeing them strut!

Nice job and way to stick with it! It sounds like it was a great way to spend the am whether or not you got a bird!!
