Wanted to let you guys know. I have been making hand turned slate calls for a year now and pretty much have nailed down how to make them not only look good but sound good as well. The most popular ones I've been selling are the laminated calls. I mix and glue several species of wood together in a contrasting pattern then plane them to thickness, cut them to size then turn them on a lathe. All have unique side profiles and are finished with three coats of polyurethane. Some of the wood I use are oak, cherry, hackberry, walnut and Jataba. They are very good at producing high volume and medium tone yelps and cuts and also soft clucks and purrs to draw them into range. All come with a zebrawood or lacewood striker.
