Got it done

Initially I was leaning towards going during 3rd season based on my schedule but we switched up schedules at work on Thursday and the forecast looked a little rainy during 3rd season (I don't trust it that far out but figured I had time to hunt 2nd anyway).

I had only deer hunted this farm in the past so didn't have a great feel where they would be roosted but I got all the way to the back of the property and was setting decoys out in a brome grass field when the first two gobbles rang out just east of me about 150 yards. I got set up and I don't think they heard my calls as they flew north across a creek. They made their way towards me but on the other side of the creek answering my calls. I didn't think they'd come back across it but sure enough they did. I had my back to a downed tree and I figured they pop through the fence row and into the brome field straight for my decoys but they gobbled directly behind me within 25 yards. I could hear them spitting and drumming but there was absolutely no way for me to think about turning and shooting so I let them work off. When they did I scooted a bit and tried to let them get west of me to call them into the field and to the decoys. I called and they came back through but in the exact same spot and I had deer within 30 yards so again, I couldn't make a move on them.

When they again went past I switched to a tree a few yards away facing where they went through twice previously. A few calls and they headed right back. Both came in to about 25 yards and only one lived to see another day at 7:05am. Have to love those two year old birds that like to play the game!

I love bringing stuff home to the little guy and seeing his reaction!
