Most Overrated Hunting Personality

All the big buck killers I know hunt the wind and hunt smart. They practice no scent control outside of that as well as a good entry / exit strategy. Most these guys are hunting public ground or heavily pressured areas yet they get it done every year. They don't have a lot of money, not a whole lot of time outside of a good week during the rut yet they get it done. Sometimes woodsmanship trumps all. These guys have the knack for finding the spots that will produce year in and year out.

I think Todd and the WK crew is who I think is the most overrated. Just my own personal opinion. Rip on me if you want, but it gets pretty lame when having to stick up for something so hard trying to get people to believe it works, and then rip on other big names. Just dont care for that. Sorry, but it is an opinion post :way:

Maybe I was having a bad day, but I didn't mean to sound jealous. It is all about the ground that these guys hunt which = oportunities at big deer. If you think these guys who are killing 200" deer every-year are doing so because they know something you don't - it's not. They are killing these deer because they have the oportunity to hunt great areas consistently. Some day, I hope to have the same set-up; believe me, all I want is a big piece of ground and a tractor. That's my life goal, and I won't stop working until I get er done.

This will proba bly be the last post, and few will read it, but here goes anyway. Every yr this is brought up I write this. Anyway,,I once got so frustrated with N-Mi deer hunting I paid for a hunt in SD-near the Big Bike Rally area. It was a cattle ranch. Open ,,No High Fence or anything. Just 3,000 acres of hay fields, some scrub oak, and hills. It was a cattle ranch with deer hunting on the side. I was the first bow hunter these cowboys ever had. Rifles were the usual. they had a barn full of big racks. Most shot from over the hood of their pick-ups they told me. Deer were everywhere. They came out early too, to drink and search for acorns. All sizes of bucks. Some nice ones . Almost no fear of humans. the cowboys could not believe the stories I told them about N-MI hunting. could not believe deer could be so shy or spooky. They drove me out to trees to put up tree stands, and hunt the same day. They were sweating, even leaving fresh cut pine boughs on the ground. You expect deer to come by here tonight I'd say? Yep, they said. And they did. Does with fawns, all sizes of bucks. Bottom line is the amount of land you can keep quiet, and keep a pop of deer safe on, has a BIG influence on what you will see and harvest!

AMEN! I think the second time I met Lee Lakosky he told me straight up "I'm not that good of a hunter, but we hunt really good land".... Obviously, Lee is a smart guy; and had done well for himself (regardless of if you like them or not).

I also have had the chance to hunt with some other guys I consider to be some of the best whitetail hunters in the world; and who have the proof on the walls. I also learned that some guys will do ANYTHING to get onto the land where these deer live. Sometimes pretty much selling their soles in the process. And some have also paid the price for their aggressive ways.

I'll stick to hunting with my good friends and passing 4 year olds until I'm fortunate enough to get a crack at a 5 year old or older deer. I work 14 hours a day to make my dreams a reality, if people want to take shots at me; go for it. It doesn't hurt nearly as bad as rose bushes and osage thorns. I love to work hard, and that always wins out over luck any-day-of-the week!

Be safe out there guys, check those straps on your stands too! One of my buddies just took a digger out of a set because his belt broke (been up too long). Always wear a harness!

!

Thats actually pretty sad. In the big scheme of life there are things much more important than going that extreme just to kill a buck. In the end no matter how big they are they're still just deer.

My opinion is all the hunting shows on TV suck. Only one I will watch anymore is Midwest Whitetails. Those guys have an appreciation for the outdoors like none of the other so called hunters.. It must be really hard for the Lakoskys to have someone watch a deer for a week and then drive in a kill it the next day. And then advertise all these big name companies for a half hour. Unlike Bill Winke who uses his whole show to educate hunters and give helpful tips. To him its not all about killing the biggest buck. Its harvesting mature whitetails and the steps and details on how he does it.
I dunno I have lost lots of respect for these other "BIG" name "hunters" over the years.

Regarding Lee Lakosky, he came from MN, where if I remember reading he had never shot a buck with a bow. He probably was not the best hunter, but has evolved into a very good bowhunter. For three reasons, one he has great property (give him credit he made it happen) and he has the time to spend hours on the stand. Third he makes the tough shots when they count.

That being said, as a father of 4 boys who are all in sports, I wouldn't be able to do what he does even if I had the opportunity. Football games almost every night, activities, I am not willing to miss them.

Todd, I do agree, if you own or lease a large chunk of ground you will have a much better opportunity to harvest a giant. It is a good goal to have to work countless hours to generate enough money to buy a farm like that. Nothing wrong with that goal in my opinion!

Lastly, I agree with the other posters on Midwest Whitetail. Love the online and TV version. Bill Winke has kids, and still makes it all work. He admits his mistakes and is not "bouyah" when he shoots a buck. In my opinion his show is the ultimate source for whitetail knowledge

Bone Collector = Overrated. One of the better shows is on Sportsman Channel, Heartland Bowhunter. But i agree with most on Jay Gregory's show. I know for fact that they hunt high fence stuff. They have a piece of property here in KS by my grandparents. A family friend of ours owns and 80 acre piece right in the middle of their section, they high fenced all the way around his piece. I understand they do it for a living but thats a little much!

I think anyone who does not introduce kids wether they are theirs or someone elses to hunting and putting their time more towards the kids banquets and others alike than some deer to make money off of. They are our future to hunting and way things are going we need them more than ever to preserve our sport!

That and growingdeer.tv are the most informative whitetail shows out there IMO. Make sure to watch those two every week.

Some other like Get in the Game/Game Keepers are great too, it covers all types of habitat/wildlife tho and not just whitetails.

I agree midwest whitetail is one of the best shows out there. Bill also does some great tips for cabelas that are on youtube. He posts a quick segment every week throughout the archery season. I've used several of his tips. The best part is he hunts right here in Iowa you have to love that!

Seems like pretty good consensus on liking the non-commercial (or at least soft sell) personalities.
Eichler, Wells, and some of the lesser known amateurs seem to strike closer to home for most of us.
I realize that a hunting show won't make it to TV unless they get $ponsored by gear manufacturers and I guess I'm willing to wade through the commercialism to see a hunt through another's eyes. As long as they are ethical and show respect to the animal, I'll keep watching.
Got to admit though, when Potts' crazy eye goes wild after the shot - that's some good TV right there.

Midwest whitetail is my favorite then Drurys, freaks, whitetail properties, and heartland bow hunter. I watch lee and tiff sometimes just can't stand the cheesy commercials.I don't really watch anything else. Good luck everyone season is coming fast! P.s Tiffany is not hot everyone!!!

Favorites would be buck commander guys, drury videos, stan potts.. I dont like anything from white knuckle prod. Oh and i hate jim shockeys shows, he makes everything way to dramatical and talks about his problems more than the hunt

How can you like Stan, but not Jim Shockey? He rocks, you just probably don't like the format of his "Professionals" show. If I could pick one outdoor channel guy to spend a week in hunting camp with, it would probably be Jim Shockey.

About the only personalities I watch anymore are the ones in the Primos videos.

Alex Rutledge was also a good old boy that I met and he was a down to earth guy.

Met Mark Drury and he was an arse. Same with Eddie Salter.
