Mountain Lion Photographed in Northwest Kansas

10/21/2009

A deer hunter snapped photographs of a wild mountain lion roaming in northwestern Kansas making the sighting the second only verified wild mountain lion report since November 2007 when a young male cougar was shot by a landowner in Barber County.

The last known report prior to these encounters was in 1904.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staff verified the photographic evidence taken outside of Wakeeney.

"KDWP received photographs of the animal, and staff were able to verify that the location was in Kansas, and the story seemed legitimate," Matt Peek, KDWP furbearer research biologist, said.

The hunter said the mountain lion appeared near a pile of corn the man was hunting over in a tree stand. He said the mountain lion came within 10 feet of him, looked up at the hunter and moved on. The hunter was able to capture multiple photos of the cat before it left his sight, and said the encounter lasted about one minute.

While there is no open season for mountain lions in Kansas, landowners are permitted to kill the cats if found in or near buildings, predating on livestock or otherwise damaging the landowner’s property.
