Nonresident deer hunting licenses became available Saturday, May 5, through the Electronic Licensing System for Iowa (ELSI) telephone system. Applicants must call 1-800-367-1188 to apply for a license.

A nonresident deer license costs $151, a habitat fee is $6 and there is a nonrefundable $5 application fee.

THE APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE UNTIL MAY 27.

The number of nonresident deer licenses available and the application process for 2001 remain much the same as in 2000. There are 6000 any deer licenses and 1500 antlerless only licenses available. The 10 zones and number of licenses for each zone for gun and bow is laid out in the application. No more than 35% of the any deer licenses in each zone may be for bow season.

Any deer licenses will be issued randomly for the season designated by the applicant until the bow or any deer quota is reached for each zone. Applicants that were unsuccessful in obtaining a license last year will be given a preference in the drawing. If the bow quota is reached first, any deer licenses will continue to be issued for any firearm season until the zone quota is reached. After all any deer licenses are issued, antlerless deer licenses will be issued to unsucessful applicants who indicate they will accept an antlerless license.

(If you check the box for accepting an antlerless deer license you WILL NOT get a preference point towards next year.)

Applicants unsuccesful in the drawing will be assigned one preference point in addition to any preference point assigned from last year. Preference points will not accrue in a year in which applicants fail to apply, but applicants will retain any preference points previously earned. Once an applicant receives a license, whether an any deer or an antlerless license, the preference point will be eliminated. Preference points will apply to any zone or season.

The nonresident deer application is also on the website:

Doug,

Thanks again for more great info! I called in all of our NR applications (13) last week - the phone-in system is great.

Another new item for NR's this year is the requirement that a copy of a completed Hunter Safety Course certificate be faxed in with the application for every NR hunter required to have completed this course.
