NATIV Nursery swamp white x white oak is looking great!!! Planted at the house in Olathe, KS. Hoping for acorns in a couple more years!!

No dieback this past winter at all and it's put on 2' of growth this year already.

If it's tubed trees and you're very careful (don't have your sprayer on a fine mist) - just use round-up and being the trees are tubed, you should be absolutely fine. Round-up is not residual so you'll have to do a few times.

Looks great on those trees, lucky dog with all that growth!

I set the wand to spray out smaller drops instead of a fine mist, hold the wand next to the seedling and the point is away from the seedling. Easy to circle it around the seedling and never touch green that way or worry about wind carrying a mist.

I want to spray an area for doing a tree planting next spring but its along the edge of a bean field. Will the sfm75 leach into the field and kill the beans?

I have a few chestnuts seedlings 12-24" tall that I need to protect this winter. They are currently tubed but I don't know if that will work. The seedlings are from my father in laws tree and he has since past, so I got to keep them growing. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Are they vented tubes? Could experience some dieback if they are not vented.

No they are not vented they are the blue x tubes, sofar they are growing great in them. I do have 130 crabapple trees
In the tubes currently I planted them last nov they were 2' trees and over a hundred are at least 5' tall. Back to the chestnuts I was wondering if I should buy the styrofoam rose bush containers for winter. I will wrap window screen around them in case mice get to them

Chestnut trees

Unfortunately most of the nation’s chestnut trees succumbed to blight decades ago, but when these trees were common, they were highly favored wildlife mast. Whitetails especially love chestnuts so interest in growing blight resistant Chinese chestnuts and Chinese X American hybrid trees has grown. I have been started Timburr hybrid trees from seed purchased from Oikos Tree Crops. The chestnut seed are easy to start and grew rapidly in RootMaker cells and I planted them next to food plots and tubed them.

My first experience with chestnuts was a total failure (like many of my initial tries at anything) because I didn't tube or fence them. Rabbits and deer immediately ate all 200 trees to the dirt like they were candy, so I advise protecting your chestnuts if you plant them. My friend Walt purchased Dunstan chestnut trees from Walmart and Jess planted them in the spring 2013.

The trees survived the bitter cold Iowa winter and seem to do well, the only mortality came from a buck that tore the cage down and then demolished the tree. One tree produced a burr already so I expect these trees will pick up speed over the next few years and produce heavily in about the same time as dwarf fruit trees.

What I wouldn't give to walk my farm and check the trees I planted over the years but barring a miracle I'll never walk again. I would love to know if my chestnut trees survived but I never regret planting a single tree and I have planted 50,000 in my lifetime. Chestnuts will not grow everywhere especially in colder northern areas but if you live where they will grow I encourage you to add some in and around your food plots. A good friend of mine has a chestnut orchard and says the deer don't wait for them to fall but stand on their hind legs, knocking them to the ground. They pop open the spiny hulls and devour the sweet nuts one after another! Those are Chinese chestnuts and deer couldn’t eat them fast enough so no reason to spend money on a certain brand.

Jesse has helped me plant trees since he was a child, we always worked together but now he carries the weight of world solely on his shoulders. While he shares my passion for creating wildlife habitat he also has to run the business which often means 16 hour days and little time for pictures. I hope someday however, he will walk this farm with his children and say "look at these chestnut trees, your grandfather and I planted these years ago"

It's never to late to plant a tree and chestnuts will be bringing in whitetails quicker than you might think

tree pruning

Can somebody give me some positives/negatives on pruning trees this spring after being in tubes for one full year? They were planted last spring and are White and Northern Reds in 4, 5, and 6ft Plantra tubes. Do you lift the tube and prune it down to a central leader or wait for multiple stems to come up and out the top? Will it slow the growth but give you a straighter tree in the future?

Does anyone have any extra Dwarf Chinkapin Oak acorns that they would be willing to sell? When I checked with the source I have used before out of NE he was sad to say that he didn't get much of a crop at all this past fall. I would like to grow some in rootmakes cells again like I did a couple years ago. Let me know what you guys might have. Thanks.

you probably will have the most trouble finding specifically DCO's because most guys direct seed those in fall. They do this because DCO's are one of the fussiest seeds to grow in pots or store. It's maybe one seed out of dozens I won't store or grow up before planting. That unique seed is one I direct seed. obviously August on is the time to find folks selling but i'd do what you're doing now and try and find some guys that do collect & sell them. hope you find some now but it could be plan B for you.

Well, after two years of failure trying to store DCO's over winter I placed my order for seedlings from Oikos today. I'm also excited to see what I can get to grow in my Bottom ground, so I'm trying to talk some folks into splitting an order from the Iowa nursery so I can order more varieties, but have fewer trees to find a home for...

In the last two years I've been working on hinge cutting but I struggle with identification of what I'm looking at

... This winter my food plots were Annihilated by December so that tells me I need to add more Browse!

I've been reading about Whitetails being very fond of Mullberries for Browse, does anyone have any experience with this?

If you haven't already done so, I would recommend reading through the Timber Stand Improvement thread also found here in Dbltree's Corner. I have found in years past that if I drop some trees in January or February while doing TSI, that the deer are browsing those tops usually within hours.

So you are getting a two for one, creating better habitat by thinning your woods and providing fresh browse to the herd during an otherwise lean time of the year.

RIGHT ON DAVER! TSI - that's gonna be key!!!
Absolutely, I'd plant a diversity too. One drawback to TSI - if you're clearing junk and you have too much junk, often junk will grow back. So, in general, in "junk areas", I do like interseeding more desireable trees, shrubs, etc. But, even cutting junk will create more browse, no question.

OK - with DCO's.....
DCO's are very hard to store. Success is USUALLY minimal at best. DIRECT SEED THEM. I still will do this. An EXAMPLE of "pretty cheap" and "more trees for the $" (since Oikos is expensive, let's face it.)...... Continue to buy the acorns or collect them.... Plant each acorn carefully in your desired location. Put a tree tube around each one - for cost, it can be 12" high (like cut up tree tubes). When early summer comes around.... Check the trees - the ones that are coming in well - put up larger tubes (yes, you could do that to start & save a step) that will be homes to protect them as they grow.

ALSO.... Make sure your weed control is great with these at all times - even the planted ones from Oikos. At the time of seeding (if direct seeding), you could, for example, spray round-up around the areas. Then, after they are coming up and growing, hit the areas with a combo that includes a pre-emergent (simazine, atrazine, Plateau/Panoramic, Prowl, etc). The Oikos trees, make sure you keep them protected and stay on weeds. I'd use larger tree tubes out of the get go. GOOD LUCK!

Shoot, just reading this now... I just put a bunch of DCO acorns in storage in the fridge last fall a guy sent me. We'll see how they do in a few months.
