Timber burn

I only took one pic, but we pulled off a nice timber burn yesterday. We used leaf blowers to make fire breaks and otherwise used creekbed dropoffs to contain it. Where the timber met the field on one side, we ran the tiller down the edge of field.

Everything went smoothly. This pic is the downwind edge of the fire where we started the back burn. I am anxious to see if we find any morels in this this spring. We probably burned around 4 acres.

Find any sheds ??
No, but my son had already scoured the area previously. We are also going to burn a section of our CRP with the hopes of finding a shed, or two. But the wind was not right for that yesterday.

Instead, we burned two other small sections, each about an acre, without incident. Lots of people burning yesterday!

The timber I burned last year had a great mushroom season. Not sure if that was cause and affect or coincidence.

I am trying to limit the amount of trips the fire department makes to my farm to “1 a year”. It has been about 18 months since the last trip …. The previous 12 months to that had 3 trips …. So- I am trying to figure out the math if I’m technically due yet!?!?! ;)

Looks great! I do have some folks that volunteered to torch a ridge so that might be underway soon. Good job on yours!!!!

Expectation out of a timber burn like that? New undergrowth? Canopy pretty closed in that area?
The canopy is fairly open in this area, as we have done TSI (about 12+ years ago) and then did a relatively light timber harvest last year. I need to go back through though and the few ironwoods that remain.

That brought on more MFR than I want in this area. I want it thick there, but not with MFR.
We'll see how it reacts this year and go from there.

I had a crazy one a couple weeks back. Had a fire on a property I own. No one had been there in almost a week, and we had no idea how it got started. The fire department had to come out and get it under control as it got into a CRP field.
After some investigating, it turned out that a cable running between a solar panel with a 12v battery and a trail camera had melted and started the grass on fire. The cable is the metal wrapped kind that are supposed to be chew proof. I'm not sure if something shorted out or if the cable was cut by the metal wrap.
On this same property I had the fire department come out 3 years ago because someone called in my controlled burn of a pile of cedars. I guess I should have let them know I was burning but I never thought someone would call it in, they could see my pickup was there.
4 years ago, the fire department was there for a fire that I'm still not exactly sure where it came from, that one was on some neighboring property as well but mine was the main excitement because of a CRP field and a concerned homeowner.
And about 8ish years ago they came out for a fire that was my fault, burning trash and it got away from me.
So yeah, I'm extremely gun shy of burning on that piece. It's some sort of fire magnet. I'm sure the firefighters refer to me as a frequent flyer at this point.

Wouldn’t hurt to drop some goodies off at the firehouse each Christmas.
