Dogwood cuttings

Hardwood11

It is going to be a good fall!
I’m going to try some Red Osier dogwood cuttings in Iowa … anyone had success ?

I’ve only done it a few times, any tips would be appreciated.

Need to trim em a bit .. going in next Tuesday!

Do you plant each cut stem or cut each stem into more cuttings (ie make three cuttings out of each stem in the bucket)?
I’m just going to make 15-18 plantable sticks out of what I have .

I’ve got so much dogwood at my farm , it’s endless. This is going to be an experiment on Napier soils in Iowa ? See how it goes ?

I'm pretty sure dogwood and Willow have their own natural rooting hormone as long as you rough up one side and plant them nodes up into the ground up a few nodes deep you should be fine
The biggest problem I've experienced with them is that the deer will eat them before they get a chance to survive planting them in areas with fallen trees to protect them or caging them off is the best option do your love dogwood.

This didn’t work in Western Iowa. They died. Could be the soil type? I’ll replace them with Plum & crab apple this spring.

My other tree rows , mixed oak, swamp white oak, spruce, and crab apple—95% survival !

I've had minimal luck in SE MN as well. Both Hybrid Willows and Dogwood haven't faired well. Less than 5% success. However, it is free to try, I guess. Only lost time.

I've yet to ever get a cutting to work here either, makes me scratch my head when others have such good luck!

I have a tree under my deck that I've been using in town as my source. Maybe the source can be the issue?

I also have about 100 planted on my property Silky and Red Osier that I bought planted and tubed as bare root that all did awesome. Might try cuttings from those as they are big enough now. Might pay to plant some in a garden "nursery style " for a year and try that route....IDK. Great shrub to have for sure!!

What did you do for weed control?
I did some hybrid willow cuttings last year and had %100 success with several that grew to 10’
I put a couple flakes of grass hay around each one, gave them their first drink, and touched up around them with roundup to kill the brome.
