Got to get this out There

DMARLEY83
So I'm at camp Mitigwa with my 13 year old boy scout for the fall camporee

When I pulled in I noticed the flag flying high not at half mass. Let it go. Chalked it up to pathetic but not wanting to get political.

Made it through a day of scout activities all good. Tonight at the camp fire noticed a staff member in a staff shirt Probably 6'5. 260+, A clear Adam's apple, boobs, and make up.

I've been trying to keep my son on tract to earn his eagle and been having a difficult time doing so but he continues I think mainly not to let me down.

I see this sh** and I'm think why the f are we here! This was boy scouts. Now scouts. Now as a dad not sure what to do.

His troop is solid. His leader is solid. They are in a boys only troop but I'm sure as sh** not ever coming back to camp Mitigwa!!!!

The question is why am I pushing him to continue?

I'm open to hear all opinions if you care to share.

I know it wasn't like that before. My wife was a lifeguard and taught swim lessons there when she was in high school over 2 decades ago. This country gets more strange with every passing day.

As long as you are with him, he'll be ok. Use it as a teaching moment. I never let my kids do anything by themselves and that was 20 years ago...not even church camps. One knuckle head can mentally screw up your kid for life. They don't have to look the part either, one of the normal looking ones can be the worst of the bunch.

The solution is easy.....My child and me are OUT. There is no way in hell I want my child around that garbage. Eagle, so freaking what. He will learn more from you taking him hunting in the fall and in the winter time than anything the garbage there has to offer.

Men are Men
Women are women
All the other stuff is garbage.
End of discussion.

I tend to go along with this. Your presence is support . I see no reason to support those who hate me. I feel the same way when I'm watching a movie or series and they start portraying rural people, Christians, or conservatives as if they are all racist bigots or stupid. I don't care how far into the show I am, I'm done with it. If we don't stand against that stuff, they'll keep shoving garbage down or throats.

I 100% agree with you. That is with out a doubt the easy answer as well as the immediate knee jerk response I have myself.

The issue is when you quit it hurts your troop, your mates, your leader, and yourself more than it hurts the institution.

Another issue is we have another younger son coming up behind our l3 or old. What we do will affect him as well....

I've been stewing on this all day and weighing the pros/cons. (Ben Franklin Scale My Go To)

Not sure what we are going to do yet..

I cant justify quiting as a better answer however we will never again attend Camp Mitigwa.

Are you able to bring this up to your troop leader and have a discussion with him? I myself many years ago have a lot of great memories from boy scouts and some of my best friends then are still in my life today along with learning some great and valuable life skills. If your son and and yourself are happy with your troop, I wouldn't jump ship yet. I had some great times at Mitigwa as a scout and unfortunately the organization has changed, but the road going by it is one of my favorite roads to ride my motorcycle on and always brings back memories when I go by.

Amen brother!

Talk with your troop leader/other parents in the troop. Surely you are not the only one feeling that. If you have a strong troop, remain, and maybe incorporate/solidify your values in some way.

Its sad to see the Boy Scouts organization change to Scouts and hear the camp has staff like that individual. I grew up going to Mitigwa for many years as a cub scout and boy scout and have many fantastic memories from my youth from Mitigwa and just being in Boy Scouts overall. I'm an Eagle Scout, and Im disappointed to hear how the origination has changed so much in recent years. Boy Scouts use to be the maker of men. I'm very fortunate that the troop I belonged to was pretty tight knit. We were very active; had our weekly meeting, camping a couple times of month nearly year round, high adventure to Colorado, weekly summer camp at Mitigwa. Most of the other guys in my troop were pretty active in sports as well, football, basketball, track & cross country, wrestling. I loved all the camping and working my way up through the ranks. Great memories growing up.
