Apple/Pear Trees

Grew some wild plums at the house from the MDC nursery that aren’t sweet. Decided to try some sweet cherry varieties to the rootstock and see how they do.

So far so good. The grafts try to outrun the sustenance the rootstock is providing, so I trim them some to keep them in balance.

Tags are gone, so not certain if these are rainier, bing etc. we shall see if they’re pollinated by the other sweet cherries I have going.

That’s crazy!!! Cherry on plum?!?!? That’s amazing it worked!! Always wondered if someone could go a step further & see if some fruits could be grafted on some vigorous trees in a guys area. Imagine if u could graft fruit on like a locust tree :).

Grafting during a botany class way back when. Put tomato top on tobacco root and have poison tomatoes loaded with nicotine.

I was successful grafting apple onto a dwarfing rootstock, but as a college student I had no place to plant it. :(

Was told that one could graft a hop vine onto a cannabis root and smoke the cones. :)

Nice amount of fruit on the apple tree (unfortunately the tag blew off) so I’m not sure which crabapple this is?

Dolgo, Whitney, Chestnut crab ?
Any idea from you apple experts ?

Some of my apples hold until they rot in the tree. Not sure why this is happening?
I think that is varietal difference. We've got a couple of apple trees in the orchard like that. Also, 1 of 3 of our pear trees will never drop the fruit. The pears turn into a sugar sack and the hornets have a feast.

Years ago, picked up a couple of heavily discounted apple trees at WalMart or Theisen's. The tree on the right side of the pics is one, second one is farther to the right. The tree on the left is an oak raised from an acorn. Good apple year and not one on the ground under them, all cleaned up, thanks to possum, deer, coons and coyotes.

The ones available still are great varieties too!

Anyone from SC Iowa want to group an order together for pear trees yet before 5/1 from Blue Hill?
I would be in for some...
