Trees

I do hear about Morse tree nursery. Haven’t tried yet.
So-so results with chief river or cold stream nursery (one was better than the other- I forget which).
MO dnr tree nursery has stuff like persimmon & great oak stuff. Iowa has great oak selection.
Get pears too. Persimmon, chestnut, crabapple like dolgo. Chinkapin oak is good. Etc etc.

As we all know diversity is very important when planting for deer and growing fruit trees for whitetails is no different.

This is the nursery I have used the last 3 years and have planted a couple dozen each year. I’ve mixed it up with apples, crabapples, pears, persimmon and chestnut. 100% so far with trees leafing out/survival.

2022 was the first year I planted his trees and they were all 3-5 foot tall whips. Last year he started to offer larger, 2 year old trees as his primary offering.

This year I had 4 crabapples from my 2022 planting that fruited. In total I have about 75 of his trees so far and he is a great guy to work with.

Good to know. I did order some from bluehill along with some other places. That year I had a high die off on blue hill. My concern was- so much of the root system was cut off. The ones I have 2 years later still haven’t grown much due to rebuilding roots. Now- that could be just bad luck or a batch they cut it too much. But it for sure was an issue.

I will also admit- this is coming from a guy that’s very fussy on growing grafted trees. I planted about 2,000 in rootmaker bags - which when I moved them- retained over 90% of the root system on 4-5 year old trees. So- maybe I’m just spoiled. If a guy really had the bug to grow & transplant later- it sure is effective. A lot of work but effective. 99% of folks- just do above Though & get good trees from good sources. Put the extra time, $ & care into protecting them. It’s extremely worthwhile - do it right…. Like fruit trees- screens on trunk, t posts & cage. Water if drought. Mulch or weed control, etc. Once they get super established- gets way easier. Worth babying them for a few years.
 
Morse Pears (other stuff they offer is so-so), Blue Hill Rocks, 39th parallel is great, MO & IA DNR for regular trees/conifers and shrubs.

I real deal guy I respect greatly told me last week he's over the moon with the Whitetail Crab stock he's received for a few years now. Might try them this year

Morse is OK but pricey. They did honor their warranty on a bunch of trees I had die.

Was impressed with both Yellow River and IA DNR nursery products I have bought
