Home made ladder stands

We made them out of wood and never had problems when I first started. I don’t recall store bought being an option back then. Wish I had some old pics but they were basically a blind in the tree with sides and even a “roof” on a couple.
Basically a small tree house for 1 person.

Ok thanks sound great a tree house type they wouldn’t see you .
 
I've built lots of wood ladderstand.
They are heavy to set up, kinda ugly on the landscape, hard to get them super quite, and bears love chewing them up. Lol.
 
I didn't even know there was any other way other than nailing 2x4s to trees when I first started. At least they clean themselves up when Mother Earth reclaims them. A lot of work, but builds character so they say. :D

Ok no bears in my part of the country and I’m glad they’re hard on fruit trees also tear branches down hard on bird feeders.
 
If not done properly it's not worth the aggravation. I hunted a few homemade stands in Canada, nothing but Aspen branches nailed to longer pieces for the ladder leading to a small wooden platform with an old milk crate to sit on! Not the best for sure, I prefer to use ladder stands that I can move around if need be.

I started bow hunting at 9yrs old. (Early 90s) My grandfather owned about 120 acres on the racoon river near Jefferson IA. This was the one and only place we hunted growing up.

Not sure who built the original tree stands on the farm but there was 3 or 4 wooden tree stands built in the Y of a tree out of 2x4s.

As I got older I probably built 20 more out of 2x4s and 1/2"x8" bolts for pegs. Did not see a metal tree stand until I got a driver's license and started hunting other places.

My grandparents passed and the farm has since sold but I also had got permission on about a dozen of the neighboring farms while growing up.

One of my best buddies growing up would go with us and he has actually kept up on the relationship with one of the farms and still hunts it today. We recently visited one of those stands and the 8" pegs were almost 100% swallowed by the tree. Could just barley make out the hex head. The wood was still in the tree but dangling...

Was a fun trip down memory lane!

Never did build one like a ladder stand, probably would have but never saw one and google/you tube was still 20 years away...
