Anti second amendment would be saying you have no right to OWN an AR pistol. This poll is whether or not that AR pistol should be allowed during a season intended for muzzleloaders.

Also that same AR pistol could be used during either of the 2 gun seasons.
I do agree with you with my erroneous 2nd amendment argument. My problem is with singling out the AR pistol, which ATF has determined fits the definition of a pistol. It is pointless for us to vote on this.

Is not allowing 50 cal machine guns to hunt with anti gun? Anti 2A?

This isnt a gun issue.

Calling any poll shameful is anti American. Pretty clear how people here feel about this one.
All polls should be allowed or are otherwise anti American? This poll as worded could be compared as being gun racism. My dissatisfaction is a poll like this at a sportsman’s site like this. Have the masses become that radical?

The results of this poll are shameful. The poll itself should not be here. To single out an AR type gun be it a pistol or rifle is anti gun anti 2nd amendment. Why AR vs all include semi-auto or maybe multiple rounds? The AR piece does not belong here. As stated by others, that piece is not a debatable

Like I mentioned. Dont single it out. Make it a revolver pistol season. Problem solved!

Im as big of a 2nd amendment supporter as you will find. Also im guessing 99.99% of the members on this site or any like it are as well. This has zero to do with that.
The intent is a primitive season. An ar platform is far from that.

The overall blanket term of pistol is too inclusive.

Being a sportman on a sportsman site discussing methods of take is radical to you?
Im trying to wrap my head around that.

I love guns. Huge 2A supporter. I have tons of guns that I dont beleive should be used in certain seasons to pursue certain game. Should I be able to use my 1,000 yard elk rifle to hunt whitetails in Iowa? Hell no.

Again.... this isnt a Gun issue. Not in the least.

The issue with all of the gun regulations around hunting is that the regulations are always way behind technology.
30 years ago a muzzleloader meant one shot and probably 150 yard max range. Now it’s 300-1,000 depending on the shooter and setup. I like to think when pistols were allowed for late muzzleloader the intention was a 45 long colt in a revolver and stuff like that.

The problem is when the term “pistol caliber” turned into anything you can hold onto without ripping your hand off and then that issue was solved by arm braces. Now the 20 day late muzzleloader season just turned into a 20 day gun season.

While we were evolving how did the deer evolve? They weren’t!
We exploit every loophole we can find, giving us an advantage for a while and then get mad when anyone talks about closing the loophole. We argue that the loophole wasn’t that big of a deal and that us exploiting it doesn’t make any difference. If it’s not that big of a difference then why is anyone mad about losing it ?

Totally agree the people who originally decided to allow pistols probably did not intend to have AR style pistols being used..
Unfortunately, where do you draw the line tho? Ban semi-auto pistols? Single shot or revolver only? Caliber bans? Where do the TC contender type guns fit in? It always seems like someone will come up with a new weapon to work around the regulations on technicalities. I honestly don’t know or care that much but the regulating always gets tough. No easy answer. The former assault weapons ban included AR’s and AK type guns yet a Ruger Mini 14 was perfectly fine. Everybody freely admits none of that made sense. There’s probably an answer out there but getting people to agree on it would be tough. If people want to change this they will have to really narrow down what they actually want and find a way to eliminate loopholes and somehow dumb it down enough where non-hunting/gun owning legislators understand it and support it. Totally agree it probably should be cleaned up to fit with the original intent of allowing pistols but that’s easier said than done. It’s gonna take some real work.

Wait..so people can use a AR pistol during late season muzzleloader? With straight wall cartridges? I didnt even know this was legal
Yes. Most hunting handgun calibers between .35 and .50 caliber that generate sufficient energy and are straight-walled are legal for deer season in Iowa under the pistol/revolver seasons. So shotgun 1&2, and late muzzleloader. ATF regulates which AR receivers are serial numbered as a pistol. Thus, any .350 legend, .400 legend, .450 bushmaster would all legal to use if the receiver is serial numbered as a pistol.

Probably have to restrict late muzzleloader to blackpowder and archery equipment only to prevent anyone from finding a new loophole.

How come there aren’t many complaints about my .416 Barrett and .50BMG during the shotgun seasons?? If the deer is vaporized does it really even count?? I wish we could count on the legislature to understand guns.. it hasn’t happened yet tho. Should be a good lesson! Don’t support anything new! We have enough! No matter how good you think it could be it will only get worse! “progress” is often a scam

The gun laws for Iowa shotgun are idiotic.
50 BMG is illegal because it is actually .510 caliber - only .35 to .50 are legal and it does NOT have to be a straight wall cartridge.
The 375 H&H, 416 Barret, 470 Nitro, 475 Weatherby Magnum, etc. are perfectly legal for Iowa Deer Shotgun season (and a good choice for Elephant sized game)
Guns like the 35 Whelen are selling like crazy with Iowa Deer Hunters - I've sold and transferred dozens of those for Iowa Deer Hunting
Yet common guns like 30-30, .243, 6.5 Creedmor, 270, 7mm Mag or 30-06 are illegal since they are under 35 caliber and No I do not think they should legalize those.

Sorry, I file off .11to make my BMG legal! Good catch!! I did actually own a semi auto .416 barret for a few years.. absolutely crazy to think I could legally hunt with that. You know as well as anybody on this issue. A Whelen shooting hand loads or lightweight/copper Barnes etc.. impressive.. beats most rounds typically used all over the country. Bottom line is nobody should ever trust the legislature to figure out gun laws as they relate to deer hunting

If it wasn't for the $10K price tag I'd build a .375 CheyTac and shoot a deer at over a mile to prove how stupid the current laws are.
Guns like that have been know to be accurate in extreme cases at over 2 miles!
I will bet there are several people in Iowa right now that have those and that they have been used for deer hunting as they are completely legal.

My grandpa who was a Sheriff would probably be embarrassed of me for not remembering what the letters of the D.A.R.E program actually stood for... I don’t remember that but I do remember “Just Say No!” I like to apply this to new hunting regs.. if we all just “Said No!” It would be ok! Any new reg.. solid NO! We’d all still have our personal grievances but overall nothing would change! It could be worse! At least we know what the issues are and it won’t get worse! There is little to gain by winning the battle and losing the war.

This!!!!

I actually have an email response from a senator when I was emailing them about straight walls... they stated these calibers wouldnt be legal. I kept explaining how they would be. When it passed I sent a follow up email... Basically an I told you so email.

The legislatures dont understand enough about guns or the issues.

As hunters, we agree on 90% of the issues! The problem is we are a very small part of the electorate! It takes a very small percentage of people to argue technicalities and totally baffle the majority of our elected officials. It is way easier for those elected to just ignore something new. It sucks sometimes but has generally been very good at keeping our hunting regs different from other states. I’m sure there are a few things I’d like to change with our regs but I have next to zero confidence a new law will change them how I really intended them to be changed. Messing things up is the pretty much the only thing our elected officials are good at! Our good intentions seem to get corrupted every time. Wish it was all easy to fix

Straight wall regs should have been a sign.. whether we agreed or disagreed with the original intent… ANY new reg/allowable tech will be taken advantage of to the fullest! Once we all realize this we will be much more cautious of ANYTHING new.. OUR intentions are pretty meaningless.. once a law is written it’s all up to people way higher on the legal totem pole than us. We have to keep in mind that the BAD that could come from any new reg could be way worse than any potential good. We already have it pretty good., Most states are prime examples of how it could be worse.
