I’m a broken record but live in Arizona so I only get June to do prep work on the Ohio properties. I’m making some mock scrapes using a platform in a wide V shape attached to the top of a cedar post and may try some pine as well. I’ll be running two to three branches extending off the platform...
Do any of you have persimmon dealers you buy from that you would be willing to share, pm?? Blue hill is always sold out on day one of opening and I never can get my hands on them. I talked to a consultant who sells them but he has no idea if they are male or female, for the price and the gamble...
Couple more alfalfa questions….
I’m assuming my arrival date to the Ohio farm of June 8 is not a good planting date correct?
My method will be broadcast. I’ll likely spray, till, spread cover seed(oats) pack, then broadcast the alfalfa clover blend on top of soil and finish with another...
Regardless of size it will need clipped is what I’m gathering, moving things around it looks like I’ll be in the acre to acre n half range. I’ve read through a chunk of the dbltree thread, seems like a handful of guys let the deer do the work while most clip and bale.
Also if I plant in the 1-2 acre range do you see a medium low deer density due to ehd hit property not requiring frequent mowings with the smaller acreage?
My se Ohio piece has no farmers in the area running alfalfa. I’ve never tried it but seen farms 20 miles away that have piles of deer hitting theirs. The farmer who runs hay on me would likely invite it. I’m curious, what’s ideal time to seed, what rates, run a cover crop, is early June too late...
I’m working on combatting against the dip stick neighbors sloppy skills and corn piles. It’s a losing/very uphill battle. There’s no one close putting in fruit like I am, for my yearly budget…I’m taking the Higgins and everyone else’s advice of give them what they can’t find anywhere else.
.
I like this and for a bait state and my layouts it makes more sense. My west wind set ups just don’t work effectively, the destination plot has no setups unless I hunt a very high quality sealed blind. The backside of the farm also has tillable and sets up great for west. Thanks on this, needed...
I’m not giving up on bait bans in Ohio but not overly optimistic. When you guys supplemental feed leading up to season, do you run homemade blends? Anything with buck on the bag is so expensive and not feasible on my budget. Do any of you have a co op mix you can make that does the trick? If...
Curious if anyone has a blend or single seed they use with great results? I was looking at Grandpa Rays but if there’s a generic that works well I’d be interested!
Do you all have micro orchards or do you keep your fruit all in the final destination plot? I’m curious if you had a small 60x30 kill plot that serves a staging plot that’s in a primary scrape hub would you add a couple trees to make it all the more powerful? Or do trees have to be in those...
In my areas in SE Ohio no one chasing deer is running alfalfa. Many years ago when I lived there I recall alfalfa fields the farmers had being the place to glass big bucks. Wondering what your thoughts are on alfalfa for deer? Are there blends with a year round draw or is it specific to certain...
