Here we go again EHD????

Neighbors starting to find some dead deer over here. We've been overdue. Last time we had any noteworthy ehd was 2013

I found a buck yesterday in Van Buren County. I had seen him at 15 yards 36 hours earlier apparently healthy other than a small amount of saliva running from one side of his mouth. I’m guessing 4 years old.

I found a nice buck dead a couple days ago and smelled another one on the gravel rd that runs by my farm. I saw a lot of buzzards circling the big creek that runs thru the area. I did check one pond, and nothing was dead by it. It might just be hitting some in Decatur co.

Last weekend while pulling SD cards from cameras, I smelled death on two different properties in Johnson County, one close to a creek. The wind was too still to "bird dog" the scent and didn't feel like randomly wading through multiflora rose to investigate. Neither was real close to a road, so doubting traffic fatality.

I have found zero but I’ve yet to have a single year in 15 or so years without finding some. I had one big buck drop off the cams about 4 weeks ago… I’d lay a nickel he’s dead & it’s ehd.

Over time - it’ll lessen as resistance and antibodies produced. The big wild card is IF/WHEN a new strain hits. No sense worrying about that. The 2 main serotypes that have hit iowa over last decade+ have likely made their way through MOST of the state. They will continue to build resistance. About the only way to avoid EHD exposure is to be in areas void of cattle. Or a big expanse/buffer from another deer population. Cattle are going to harbor & bring in the new strains (& current strains). Reason #9,010,087,020 I wish we had no cattle here. But- that’s world of make believe so…. Time will eventually solve this and those willing to do things for prevention…. For sure doable.

Im guessing there is some ehd kill in southwest polk county area. The bike trail i ride and run regulary on lunch break the past 1.5 week has dead smell in spots along it where a creek runs along it.

There goes the last 10 deer left out west then.
Strange, I’m seeing a lot of deer on camera. I’d say I have 30-40 deer (guess) on my 353 acres ?

Definitely EHD in the past 2 years, but for whatever reason the numbers are not as depressed as one would think. Definitely a lot of fawns, and a bunch of young bucks+ a few studs !

I fished below the Coralville dam on the river Saturday morning and saw 2 dead does on the river bank. I definitely smelled them long before i could see them. That fever/death smell is something that really broadcasts out.
We had it bad down here in Washington county last year, worst areas were around dried up wetlands areas it seemed.

The same with the Carlisle to Indianola trail.
