Seems like the ones in the lower areas have shallower roots and will pluck much larger than ones in open clay areas. Trial and error!Nice! We transplanted about 30 to a road screen 2 weeks ago. We weren’t able to pull them out as large as yours. Nice job!
Pulling them straight up and out by hand. Are you just pulling these out by hand or popping them out with a spade?
Can you expand on this ? Whats the next step ? Just get them in ground right away …Pulling them straight up and out by hand.
Page back in this thread. He pulls them bare root, sticks in buckets and transplants. Toss a little water in the bucket if they going to sit for a day or two.Can you expand on this ? Whats the next step ? Just get them in ground right away …
What size do you pull ?

1-2 footers, even up to waist height. Gotta pull when the ground is right for it. I have tried 3 times now on 2 different farms, only got some to pull and that was after a big rain. Having the ground right seems to be key.
Not that I have experienced. Usually, ERC has low branches that prevent it. Occasional tree might get hit, but more of the exception from what I've seen. You guys that have lots of red cedar.
Do bucks rub them enough to kill them?
I see them get rubbed some. Not very often, but you'll see it. Usually doesn't kill the tree. You guys that have lots of red cedar.

No, but once in a while you will get one with thinner foliage and bucks will tickle it. Most are too thick for them to want to stick their heads in but it does happen sometimes. You guys that have lots of red cedar.

Haha yep bingoI planted several around front yard .
Have watched many bucks walk right by them over the years without notice.
Last summer, I pruned off a couple " in thier face" branches and it was game on last fall.
