Transplants

Cedar Pulling is pretty well over, but here are a few small ones from earlier in the week. Can fit around 20 in a bucket if you shake the dirt off well. Makes it very easy

That time of year again! Transplanted around 60 last night and this morning with plans to do more this week.

Filling in empty pockets in a 10 acre pure switch field I have that, unfortunately, the deer do not bed in like I hoped. Cedars should do the trick long term!

Nice! We transplanted about 30 to a road screen 2 weeks ago. We weren’t able to pull them out as large as yours. Nice job!

Seems like the ones in the lower areas have shallower roots and will pluck much larger than ones in open clay areas. Trial and error!

Can you expand on this ? Whats the next step ? Just get them in ground right away …

What size do you pull ?
Page back in this thread. He pulls them bare root, sticks in buckets and transplants. Toss a little water in the bucket if they going to sit for a day or two.
1-2 footers, even up to waist height. Gotta pull when the ground is right for it. I have tried 3 times now on 2 different farms, only got some to pull and that was after a big rain. Having the ground right seems to be key.

Nailed it. I will post a video in the next couple of days. Have rain coming and plan to do some more then!

You guys that have lots of red cedar.
Do bucks rub them enough to kill them?
Not that I have experienced. Usually, ERC has low branches that prevent it. Occasional tree might get hit, but more of the exception from what I've seen.

Along those lines, the swamp white oaks we put in had many low branches as well and I think that greatly contributed to the success of them as we didn't cage/fence.

I planted several around front yard .
Have watched many bucks walk right by them over the years without notice.
Last summer, I pruned off a couple " in thier face" branches and it was game on last fall.
Lol.
