Minnesota hunter harvests doe that was aged at 16 1/2

An article in the Minnesota Outdoor News this week about the old doe that was harvested by a bow hunter in my area… What are the odds ?

That’s the first thing that came to mind for Alexandria’s Sam Schmid after he received aging results from a doe he shot.

I shot a doe years ago that had NO teeth. Can't understand how she ate?

This is in a zone with plenty of hunters ! I can’t believe she made it that many years… & avoiding the vehicles/predators!

In Minnesota… odds are she was lost

That’s great!!!! Wow those old ones sure are cool. Think the oldest buck we ever got was 11.5. 16… Geesh! Wonder how it tasted. Bet it was actually just fine.

I shot an antlered doe in southeast Nebraska and sent her teeth in, came back at 15.5. I called the lab and they said they were confident within +/- 1 year and the oldest whitetail doe they'd ever sampled was 20.5 out of the northeast somewhere. Crazy!

Add- we ate her, never noticed anything different than the other deer we shot that year. The old = tough and gamey is bunk IMO

Crazy ! They have to be very wary to make it that long !

I'll see if I can find pics, I know I took some. "She" actually snapped part of her jaw at one point and it completely healed but left her molars in a mess.
