    Will it live?

Looks backstrapped. Barring an infection, my guess is he will be fine.

    Purdy cool. Nice buck.

Will a droptine buck throw it again?

Not sure about drop tines as that really rare round here. Here's pics of a pair of sheds from a buck I knew for years. From 4_8 years old, he held the same basic frame but he always grew some kickers in different spots. These are his 6 and 7 year old sheds. 6 year old, both browtines, 7 years...

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

Still very dismal morning/ evening activity here.
  6. Bucksnbears

    Just an oddball.

This evening, I snuck into some nasty cover along a river and hid in a log jam. This buck came out of a jungle of high weeds and was feeding on (whatever it was?) For quite awhile at 25 yards. I thought it was a half racked buck. No intentions of shooting. Once he got to about 15 yards, I...

How To Make Michigan Hunting Better

    Yessir, I realize that. ;)

    November 1

Frontal shots are extremely legal when hit " in the pocket". I've shot about 15 deer that way (usually from the ground) while doing archery drives, and they die very fast and dump LOTS of blood. Great story/ buck!.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Corn plant spacing and no weeds/ grasses in them are what I think deters them from using them.

How To Make Michigan Hunting Better

Snail, what you are whitenessing is just cultural differences. I'd say a HUGE %of Michigan hunters are happy just to shoot a buck. Most likely ain't gonna change that attitude. As for "most of Michigan has EXCELLENT habitat"..., no..., no it doesn't. Forested regions usually offer poor...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Good to see you posting Skip. Was ready to send out a search party. Lol. Reflecting back 25 ± years ago. (My area in nw Mn), we had LOTS OF BIG BUCKS! It was not uncommon to take a morning drive and see multiple 150" + deer. Common to hear a couple hundred gunshots opening morning. Bowhunters...

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

    Let’s talk arrows

My take on arrows/ broadhead. At typical whitetail range, 25 and under, a well tuned [ bow] should be able to put most any arrow into the kill zone. I've found no reason need to spend big money for close range shots. One thing I like to do is fletch with feathers. It can and does make a world of...

Shooting Does with button bucks and 8points

Quite a few years ago, had a doe with a button buck. He had an extremely red colored forehead patch and oversized buttons. I shot the doe late season to fill my doe tag. He stuck around for 8 years untill I killed him. He grew into one of the biggest bucks I've had here He was really...

I remember YEARS AGO, it was fun watching Dan Fitzgerald shooting does. :)

Getting past the “what if” phase

Kill him if YOU want him. As hunters, we should all be proud to shoot a 5 year old buck whether he's 125 or 190.

    Iowa law related to disturbance

My neighbors across the river have a motocross trail on thier side. When thier kids we young, they'd race them loud motorcycles up n down the riverbank. Many times I could sit in stands on my side and watch deer on the other side. The deer would simply (usually) get down tight to the waters...
