Did some research on this few weeks ago for this very reason. ERC is actually a Juniper and Western is a Thuja (as is the giant arborvitae). Neither are true "cedars" or cedrus.
Both are good for lumber, ERC is lighter and takes a long time to rot. Westerns grow to be very large and market for...
Started my access trail to the grove of mature cedars Saturday morning. cut and skidded a couple megas from the pond out in the CRP for starters as well. Grapple bucket for the tractor to be delivered to farm Saturday, Can't wait to get moving on this.
Posted on my projects thread but figured id stick it here too

This thread came to a close yesterday at 10 am. Closed on sale of this farm and purchased 70 acres adjacent to my home farm in Randolph County. It was a nice little farm but time to move on.
Talked to the local mill guy that said he would buy my cedar. Sounds llike we have struck a deal for him to mill out all the posts for the front and back patio at the new house wife and I are building at the farm.
I've got about 40 acres of this to work on coming soon.
Like others have said, I am going to get an FMP done and then let NRCS cost share help pay for it.
I would verify this, IF they catch fire. When a fire runs through closed canopied cedar with little to no fuel on the floor they may not catch. If they catch, STAND BACK
Scroll to 3:35 in this video, off in the distance but you can see that flame when they catch.
Foodplot GP for my big “west plot” for next 10 years. CRP qualified for HELI on the re-enrollment so has to exclude food plot acres, which didnt hirt my feelings with the higher rate and being able to screen without FSA telling me what to do.
