An interesting update on my oak savanna projects... In this picture its hard to see, but I planted half of this oak savanna in switch grass (right side) and the other half I planted in little bluestem (further back and left)... In this test, the switchgrass seemed to out perform the little...
When spraying oust around your trees and having the natives pop up around your tree plantings above, are you concerned at all about the natives blocking light to the trees or choking them out at all? What is the difference if natives are growing next to the trees or cool seasons?
Phil, Do you ever combine two of those protex tube together and put them around conifers? As per your recommendations this spring, I bought the taller protex tubes then cut them in half (cheaper per foot).... I did that to put around some red osier dogwood that I am trying to get going... I also...
I would agree with Iowabucks.... ofcourse we need to play the wind, who doesnt, but there is no harm in taking every single precaution. not only play the wind... when hunting a 170's - 180's buck, you may only get one chance and he may not come from where u are expecting, make sure ur prepared...

I recently planted some black spruce around the outside edge of a great raised bedding area in the middle of my swamp! This is where my big boys hide and I wanted to be extra sure the spruce get...
For the protex tubes are you folding the tabs the long way so that it "locks in"? I have had great luck with mine staying together after I adopted the fold method!
Paul, when you say 2 oz of oust, are you saying 2oz per acre or 2oz in your 3gal sprayer? I read the label and for most applications it is saying 1 - 2 oz per acre... I was just wondering if you are going stronger than that per acre or not.?
What is your experiences on hinge cutting poplar trees? Do they send up shoots off the trunk like a basswood or boxelder? Will a decent sized poplar survive a hinge cut?
