I would start the area with a cereal grain. Plant it and let it go through its life cycle. You could probably still get away with oats right now. Plant and pray for rain. That will be your easiest option for erosion control. Drill natives on the contour next spring and use herbicides for quick...
Thanks for all that info, Duckriver. I like the looks of the sprayed plot vs. the control.
For the folks on this site who have CRP, when converting the cp2s to 42s, or any more diverse practice, is NRCS giving credit for already established grasses? Then interseeding forbs only? I am guessing...
I would be really curious to hear more info on your experience and research. My experience is limited but I have not found natives in general to be very tolerable of imazapyr. But, maybe timing of application, rate, etc. are factors I could play with. What is your experience with residual and...
Done plenty of good work with smooth-wheeled packers but that being said, I much prefer all notched wheels. I think most folks do and the industry is showing evidence of that with what is being placed on newer equipment. Look at almost any newer planter that has a row of wheels in the rear and...
We have a 5510 mfwd at work that can do it all but is small enough to get in tight spots and turn sharp in smaller fields.
The 5320 is a bit underpowered for some purposes, the 6320 had too bulky a frame. The 5115 M rocks but way too much for a designated food plot tractor.
The 5510 has a...
MFR is awful and terribly aggressive. Agreed with above, the only exception being if it is the only ground level cover in your timber, you may consider leaving pockets of it until you are ready to get some TSI done. Make sure you kill it first before TSI so it is accessible. You dont want to...
An easement on grassland could still be grazed. Cattle production is what I was eluding to. I am sure the easement puts stipulations in place but I am not intimately familiar enough to talk specifics. Just wanted to offer the example that was presented to the committee.

It was awesome to see so much support in opposition of the bill. One of my favorite points made in this specific committee was that SRF money spent on conservation easements in grasslands devalues that land substantially, to the point that were that land to be sold, a beginning farmer could...
I will be there this afternoon with my boy. Been several years since I've been to the Classic. Will take a few pics if I am not stuck defending my personal space.

Like Sligh said, REAP or EQIP. The enrollment process for REAP was typically much easier, faster, etc. back when I was involved. The DNR also has (or maybe had?) a program called Prairie Partners that cost shared native plantings. You would have to contact one of the Private Land Biologists to...
I would buy up as much depreciated rec land as possible and manage exclusively for quail! Deer/no deer, I am really getting the bug to hunt and fish other species, using different methods, outside of the midwest. But it is hard to imagine the day where having several deer in the freezer any...
Great job Skip! Looks like fun but dont forget to make him suffer a bit... Sit him on the ground in ratty army surplus clothes on a bitter cold morning [emoji16]
Little guy sure looks intrigued. Before you know it you will be ranging deer for him and those will be the most memorable hunts of...
I've noticed hawthorn growing well in some pretty dense stands. One stand in particular is riverine timber and has been pastured in the past. Some big old oaks, silver maple and lots of elm, hackberry and locust. Lots of hawthorn in there and the bucks love rubbing on it.

I need to pick your brain on some tactics Muddy.
For me I have been successful in a different regard. I have put myself in a position to get a crack at several mature deer. 1 got a pass and a couple others have simply won the encounters. I have made some changes to my in-stand preparedness to...
