I've asked an FBN sales representative that exact question, and was told that FBN doesn't follow shatter characteristics in thier soybean varieties, so yeah, that's a concern for sure.
Not to high jack this thread but did anyone see that Pat and Nicole (The Driven) went so far to do a hosted hunt on the Bowmars place this fall?
Talk about a dereliction of common sense......
Every time that the DNR District Forester visits and we go for a walk I learn something new, and if I get stuck on indenting a tree after the visit is over I take some pictures and email them to her, and within a few hours she replies with an answer, amazingly helpful resource.
Maybe I'm an oddball, have access to LO tags, but haven't harvested a buck in several years, so it would be tough to not at least have the opportunity for Archery, Shotgun and ML. How many other LO's are in the same boat of rarely taking a buck with all 3 tags?
Attended an Organic Field Day event today at the Marion IA area Rodale Institute Organic Farm.
This planter uses a high pressure water jet to cut thru Organic material, in this case freshly roller crimped Sudan grass, a very challenging a test
One row is equipped with the water jet, the other...
Update on the Cover Crop planting for anyone that is interested. On May 19th the Cover Crop portion of the foodplot was drilled with a Blend, but failed due to lack of rain. Due to stubborness I replanted this area again on July 17, there had been a nice rain the day before, it was borderline...
Here are some pictures from today. Beans were drilled on June 10 at about 80lbs per acre, they lied in dry soil under the crimped Rye for 2+ weeks, then came some rain. There are areas where the Rye mat was so thick that the beans weren't able to punch thru, but overall all things considered...
Coincidentally I do have 6 acres!
For now will do 1/2 in the release/cover crop summer and fall mix, the other 1/2 in beans....then sit in the blind this fall and see what happens.
Actually is depends on the growth stage of the Cereal Rye, when its shorter your point is true, and this is the more common practice in Ag today, to terminate the Cereal Rye with herbicide while it is still fairly short. When the Cereal Rye is 5-6' tall, it will draw moisture from the soil...
Being too deep is a concern for sure, one theory is that when the larger seeds germinate they help to create a channel for the smaller seed to make it up to the surface.
I put last year's Fall Release mix in with the drill set for the same depth as a natives planting, but also received a timely...
That's one thing that frustrates me about this year, its so darn dry that I don't think that I will be able learn from this experience in 2023, but I keep reminding myself that some good will come of it due to what has happened so far with organic matter from Crimping last falls cover crop...
