    More active hunting tactics.

I guess I've been doing this wrong the whole time. I do everything under the sun to make sure that deer cannot or will not get downwind of me.

    October is killing me!

Abraham Lincoln once said. " if you give me six hours to chop down a tree, I'm going to spend the first four sharpening the axe" I hunted October 2nd and shot the first mature doe that didn't have fawns. I had her hung up and skinned by 530. I had no mature deer on any sort of a daylight...

Confidence Killer (story of last season)

A range finder, alot of practice, and a few does as a confidence booster ought to do the job. If this was easy everyone would be out of wall space and working two jobs to cover taxidermy bills. You can ask anyone on here about the trials and tribulations of things that have gone wrong. We all...

Blaster (Iowawhitetails poster child for safty!) NOT

Question, I used a linemans belt while putting up the sticks, stands and to get the lifeline looped around the tree. Is the linemans belt really going to sAve you from a fall? It may not save you fully. Cuts and scrapes are alot easier to deal with than broken bones/paralysis. I use my...

Blaster (Iowawhitetails poster child for safty!) NOT

I'm glad your somewhat ok. I can't see the picture. But I've got a plate/ screw ankle story also, "not treestand related". I've been trying to tell everyone that will listen and basically yelling at those that won't listen. All it takes is one oops. If ya ever need a push to a blind look me up!

    Any scrapes yet?

I take a leak in as many as my my bladder will allow. I've started mock scrapes with nothing other than a good looking overhanging branch and having the urge to go. I can't say that I've ever had a bad reaction. I try to only get as close as needed and never touch the licking branch.

SW Iowa any place or person who tunes bows?

Carters archery in St Joe mo has always done a great job for me. I'm not sure about the chinchilla dust thought. Haha, he has a few things he does a little different but he can tune a bow

Risk worth the reward? Opinions needed

The old saying goes " you will never kill him when he's 5 if you kill him when he's 3" It's entirely up to you. It's your tag and it's a wild deer. You may never see him again or he might be on your neighbors wall. That's a chance a fella takes. I personally wouldn't shoot him if I was in your...

    Mechanical broadhead suggestions?

My wife started 5 yrs ago shooting 35 pounds and is now shooting just under 50 very comfortably. Manus stingers would be my number one choice for short draw, low pounds. I shot them for alot of yrs at 70+ pounds. Great head. Best warranty in the business. So many great fixed heads Steel force...

Taxidermy advice for the upcoming season

Having seen piles of pictures and a few mounts in person Brian is the real deal when it comes to taxidermy. This post alone should tell you what kind of person he is. He's answered a few questions for me and if something ever happened with my current taxidermist he would be my #1 choice. Keep...

You sure can, they taste great in the fall also

    Safelines

I've been preaching the use of lifelines for a long time. I've never had a fall. Never had a close call. Nothing to drastically change my thinking. I have stands at 12' and stands at 30+ ft. I'm not going to fall from a tree. End of story. It's insanity to think that you can't fall. Basically 3...

    Homemade climbing sticks

I work in a weld shop and there are a handful of things that we can't do for liability reasons. I don't know the details on the insurance that we have to carry but I'm sure it's a serious investment just in case something were to come back in the form of a legal issue. We do everything under the...

    Poison Ivy survey

I didn't get it until I was 18, I'm 29 now and can't remember a summer without multiple trips to get a steroid/ anti inflammatory shot and a pill pack. I would pay 1,500 every year without batting an eye if it truly worked. I've found that the scrubbing every square inch that may have...

    Homemade climbing sticks

I'll try to have someone post a pic for me. Mine look very similar but the tree brackets are bolted on and pivot to fit on awkward trees. Kind of the way line wolf/muddy sticks pivot. Good lookin sticks. I make them in 3 and five foot sections to mix and match depending on what may be needed...

    Homemade climbing sticks

I've been making them for years and only donate them to folks that I trust to use them safely. I supply only the stick and it's up to the user to use at their own risk. I'm 100% confident that the actual sticks would never break or fail in any way

    Dove Numbers?

We have had some great hunts so far. Haven't had any problem shooting our limits since monday. I don't think that the mass majority of them have made it to southern iowa yet, just my own observation. We have noticed a huge increase in eurasian doves! Out of a 4 man limit on Monday it was close...

    no flash at night

A light that far away should only appear as a small white spot in the background. I'm not familiar with the brand your using but maybe check out the settings to make sure it's set up for 24 hr pics. Putting it in a dark room and letting it take a few pics would also solve the mystery

    Cam setting Q

15-20 second videos and as small of an interval as your cam will allow. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. I'd have to say a video is worth 10,000 words. You will learn a lot about how deer move through an area and what is really going on. Pinch points and scrapes are the only place I...
