What are your thoughts on the general units TH? I have been debating whether to hunt the general or hold out for a better tag. Still plan to elk hunt every year regardless but I have 3 pts so i could draw wyoming general next year.

The DNR did not take it. I believe it is in the record book as #2 archery non typical for iowa. He supposedly shot it opening day archery, and found it mid november in a creek. Lots of dead deer were in that creek that Fall due to EHD. I believe it was an ehd deer, but we’ll probably never...

If you’re a landowner you could purchase an additional gun tag, but otherwise you have to choose a season.

Hard to beat a .300, but my choice would be none of the above. Go archery season.

I think you must’ve had some bad luck. been shooting G5 montecs for 10 years. punched through shoulder blades on 2 bucks and have never lost an animal. probably over 20 kills over that time frame including an elk and lots of deer.

I would say it’s pretty rare to see rut activity mid December. Especially after they’ve been shot at for a couple weeks.

Hope so. We’ve killed mature bucks during shotgun that were chasing hot does, including one last year. Sometimes the fawn does will come into estrous really late like early December.

I had crazy rutting activity all around me this morning. several hot does and lots of bucks chasing. Just nothing quite big enough. this period from like the 17th through thanksgiving has always been good for me. generally not lots of chasing, but it’s a good time to catch a mature buck...

Minden is your best bet for a quality butcher in the area. Taxidermist, Mark Baker in Lawton is the best in the area imo. it’s about an hour drive but worth it.

3rd season rifle elk in Colorado would match up nicely with that time frame. There are lots of over the counter options or leftover tags in the west but for a true over the counter tag November is pretty late in the season so your options are a little more limited.

You definitely do not need a guide. Wyoming just requires a guide in designated wilderness, which is not antelope country. Antelope hunts are a fun hunt, and so is elk hunting but they are very different. I wouldn’t necessarily steer you away from doing an elk hunt on your first western hunt...
