    South Dakota Phesant Hunt 2015

Well, I have a good GSP/Brittany mix, but he's a pointer, not a flusher like most labs. He hunts well with other dogs, and always gets better each season. Finally got most of the puppy out of him after five years. I'd be willing to come up and help "guide".

    Hecs

I thought it was funny that they showed video of an under water dive, to show how it did not affect fish who can detect electronic signals well. However they were holding very large underwater cameras in front of them that had to have put out the good electrical signal as well, but not covered...

    Boone City Buck

Unless I missed something badly, Boone and Crocket says this would score 125 1/8. Definitely smaller than he looks.

    Boone City Buck

Apparently the City of Boone has some nice deer roaming their park system. A friend of mine sent me the pic of a buck found in their back yard less than 100 yards from Story St., which is the main drag through the middle of town. She said its appears to have been there for a while as the back...

How are the shot gunners doing?

Let's also not forget the example that Doubletree taught us. Clearly, if our lives were only worth the deer we have mounted on the wall or meat in the freezer, we'll have wasted on our lives on things that either moth will eventually destroy, or will end up getting flushed down the toilet. Our...

How are the shot gunners doing?

My dad hunted the public ground coming up out of the Ledges on the south side on Wednesday last week. He ran into a couple hunters carting out a big tall buck. Don't know any more than that.

    WTB German Pup

If you aren't looking to spend much, look for some "mutts" from a couple different hunting breeds. I have a GSP and Brittany mix. He's my first bird dog, and I couldn't be more pleased. Looks pretty much like a GSP, but is a little shorter, and his face is shaped more like a Brittany. Was pretty...

How are the shot gunners doing?

I don't and won't for this very reason unless I shoot something big. This forum is place for pompous do gooders to make themselves feel better and pat themselves on the back for tremendous deer management.

How are the shot gunners doing?

If you want to say you can't take a picture with the buck where it expired before you tag it, you sure as hell better tag that deer before gutting it too. I'd venture to say that the majority of hunters on this forum gut the deer before tagging it. What is the difference?

    Question on Pheasants

Ditto. I've shot and seen a lot of birds on both public and private this year in Boone/Story/Marshall Counties. Your dog will help you. Best bet is to knock on some doors and get some private ground. Might have more luck getting permission if it's just you and your dog and not a big group.

    Gun Buck

That Savage 220 is a sweet gun. A guy in our group who has never shot a deer his whole life got one and had it sighted in to where he was pin holing the target. Needless to say, our first drive was successful in him shooting a nice buck. Great gun. Would be tempted to get one myself if it was a...

    shotgun 1

As long as there are tags left, you can go to any retail kiosk and buy one for that county. I've done it the past 2-3 years Saturday afternoon of shotgun 1.

    Processing near Des Moines

We stopped using Ulrich's last year because the quality has gotten pretty bad. We took ours to Hunter Smokehouse mere Sheriton. I'll drive the two hours from where I live to take my deer there from now on. Extremely good. Their Italian sausage tastes so good you could feed it to someone who...

    Essential Oils for Cover Scents?

Has anyone used or heard of using different essential oils as a cover scent for deer hunting? My sister sells them and thinks the are the cure to every ache and ailment, which I think is a lot hog crap. However, it got me thinking about the use of essential oils as a cover scent. These essential...

    Bays Branch

I think this is probably one of those very overlooked deer spots, especially during all the early seasons before shotgun. All the deer seen were on the West side. If I live there, I would go on a "what the hell" hunt and see what shows up, especially since seeing them move around the whole time...

    Bays Branch

Anyone hunt Bays Branch? We sat on the east side duck hunting this morning and say 3 different bucks chasing does for about an hour around 7:30. If anyone is familiar with the place, they kept running through finger of trees that come all the way down to the water on the west side. Looks like...

Looking for opinions on morning hunts

Bill Winke responded to this recently. Basically it comes down to how much noise you do and do not make getting into the stand when going into timber specifically. So if it's a light you use, ok. He said he waits until it's just light enough to see the ground, the he goes into the timber.
