Merino Wool as a base layer works awesome. It's kind of spendy but well worth it. Doesn't hold the odors like Under Armour does. I also have a Merino wool 1/4 zip that I wear when it gets cold. You can catch them on camofire for cheap sometimes.
They make toe warmers that stick to the outside of your sock. I just stuck on on the top over my toes and a foot warmer insert. They're very cheap but worked wonders for me. $3 for a hunt with warm toes is a no brainer in my book!
I haven't seen any deer my last 2 afternoon hunts near DBQ. On my way home tonight I counted 5 dead deer along the highway that runs along the property...that's from the last 3 nights. No wonder I'm not seeing anything when half the herd is playing frogger.
If you can wait until after the season when they go on sale. I picked up a pair of Cabelas 1200 gram for $50. My toes got cold yesterday. I picked up a couple toe warmer packs from Menards and I'm in heaven today!
Just read in Field and Stream that the next couple days should be some of the best. They're saying that more deer are bred on Nov 15 than any other day. Bucks should be up moving before they go on lockdown.
I was surrounded by doe this evening from 2-dark. I counted 6 does. Only buck I saw was a basket rack 8 that the does chased off. Hoping for some more action this week!
I saw a nice 8 cruising this morning and wouldn't react to my grunts. I hit the horns a few times and he came running in. Was drawn back on him waiting to clear some saplings then he caught wind of me.
10 min after getting into my stand, around 2:30, I saw a 2.5 year old pushing a doe across the field. I tried grunting and tapping the horns without a response. About an hour later I did a rattling sequence and had the same buck Sprint across the field right at me. I didn't even have time to...
I'll be hunting timber near the bottom of the hill. I think just like us, they try and stay out of the wind but don't bed down because of it. I'd focus on hillsides out of the wind and creek bottoms. I don't know about the rest of the state but it's gusting to 30 here in DBQ.
Sounds like me yesterday. Got showered and everything in the truck only to realize I had to go into work earlier than normal, so I had to regretfully crawl back into bed.
