Landlocked City Owned Property - Zone 5

That is already on my agenda. But only large ones with timber a mile+ from the parking areas. Got a few of those located. Looking for best barriers to entry now.

Landlocked City Owned Property - Zone 5

Oh no it's not. I know of plenty public in 5 that is pounded relentlessly by coon and bird hunters. Worthless by nov 7th. Not happening again to me. I'm scouting for barriers to entry. Won't settle for less.

I don't see an Elkhunter in the member list.

Landlocked City Owned Property - Zone 5

I and heading over to scout some public properties in Zones 5 & 6 Feb. 25/26. Have heard there was a piece of city owned property landlocked by water & private land in zone 5, but haven't been able to identify. If anyone is familiar with such a property can you please PM me? I have 4 points...

Des Moines Register Governor Tags Article

This program had absolutely nothing to do with tourism marketing. Nothing. Since when did Iowa not fill the nonresident quota? This was purely a political favor done for some legislator's buddies like so many other pork barrel bills flying around. Exact same as Rossi getting appointed in Alaska...

People hunting right along our fence lines

I agree. First thing I'd do is make sure fence is completely posted per the law. Then I'd strategically place 2 or 3 trail cams in obvious places where the hunters could not miss their presence. Just get cheap dummy ones if you're worried about theft. I'd also move them frequently. That way...

Interesting Situation, what do you think.

Total ripoff. I don't know the law on this but they should check out all deer. I once had a doe do a kamikazee off a bridge at Sedan Bottoms. Broke it's neck. Drove to town and talked to police. The officer didn't want to drive out there, and just issued me a salvage tag to go put on it...

    Public Land Timing

I expect the difference here definitely depends on habitat. The places I've spent the most time at were Sedan Bottoms & Rathbun area in Iowa & JEPC in Illinois. These places feature a lot of big grasslands and lots of pheasant hunting. Big deer can be seen in regularity hanging out in the open...

Who is all going out of state this year.

I applied for a pile of tags but none with good draw odds. Best chance is Nevada mule deer. I do have quite a few in the 5-10% draw chance area, so you never know. Will mostly be hunting Illinois. I have 3 Iowa NR points but not sure if I'll burn them this year. Price is steep.

    New Mexico Archery Elk

Willie, By the way, I live in Indiana, but have been on about 15 big game hunts out west, all but one have been unguided. Four of my hunts were in NM. It is in my opinion the best state for someone to start elk hunting: No bonus/preference points needed; Very high number of tags available to...

    New Mexico Archery Elk

Willie, Yes, you can apply with a buddy. They call them party applications. Either you both draw, or neither. Forget unit 52. New Mexico has a unique method of pricing their hunts. If a large number of nonresidents apply for a specific hunt one year, the next year they classify that hunt...

    New Mexico Archery Elk

Hey Willie, I just checked my 2005 regulations. Unit 52 was classified as HD (high demand). Skip that. That is what you have to look for. With their system, most all the HD hunts are overpriced. 44/45 was regular price. This hunt is great for someone who enjoys backpacking. You can...

    New Mexico Archery Elk

Danno, As I staterd in an earlier post, I backpack into unit 44/45. There are only 3 wilderness areas in NM. They lie in unit 52, 44/45, & the Gila area. The Gila is not a good candidate for a rookie. More expensive and harder to draw. I've heard good things about unit 52 as well, but...

    New Mexico Archery Elk

Willie, If you decide you want to go on your own, for your first elk hunt, I have 2 suggestions, depending if you like to backpack. For driving in, I'd apply for unit 49. Draw that and I can tell you where to go to get shots at a 5x5's. Lots of Colorado guys go there because they can get a...

    New Mexico Archery Elk

I've archery elk hunted New Mexico 4 times. Wouldn't waste money on an outfitter, even for a rookie. I hunted 3 units out of my van/campsite: Unit 55 & 49. I backpacked in to unit 44/45 twice. New Mexico is a great state to concentrate on as quality is above average and draw odds very...

    My apologies.

jj6, Actually I believe they are raising the NR price by $100 and putting a doe tag on there for 2006. That is what I read anyway. There's no dove season in Iowa? That really surprises me. That belongs in america's heartland. Hey I heard antler restrictions are expanding in your state...

    New Hunters Lose Interest:

Yesterday I spent my father's day watching my 3 boys play video games all day. I asked one if he wanted to play catch in the back yard......no. I asked if he wanted to play dad at basketball......no. I asked if anyone wanted to go bike riding with me......no. I asked another if he wanted me...

Iowa NR Draw results are IN!!

jj6, That's because the majority of nonresidents apply for the archery tags because they are during prime rut. The gun applicants are actually lower compared to the number of tags available. Another thing that makes the gun tags not as popular is their short season length. Bottom line is...
